East Cork Snooker East Cork Snooker

by DEREK KIELY

MUNSTER Snooker’s council held their ‘Annual General Meeting’ at their regular venue ‘The Wag- on Tavern’ in Fermoy last Tuesday night and after what was a very positive year for the Province both on and off the tables and even better things are ex- pected to come over the next twelve months. Outgoing

chairman

Connie O’Sullivan said “It is great to see the work that was done by the Munster Snooker Council over the past twelve months and considering that we have been trying for many years to get a very productive and hard-working council together, last May 2017 it

all came together with

dedicated snooker people involved. Everyone played their part over the twelve months and the council looks if anything to be get- ting stronger by the meet- ing and with our Munster Snooker Council ‘Finals Weekend’ coming up on the 1st

and 2nd of Septem-

ber in Fermoy it just shows how far we have come to- gether”.

May 2017 was a signifi-

cant moment for Munster Snooker with the proper setting up of a Munster Snooker

Council (MSC)

after years of an idea of a MSC it finally happened with the election of ‘Of- ficers and Committee Members’ and a strong group to further the in- terests of the game in the Provence

of Munster,

with a good geographical spread of people dedicated to work on the MSC. Tom Ahern at the Wag-

on Tavern in Fermoy Co. Cork to be honest was exceptional

every time

the council met and all the members of the MSC were sincerely grateful to Tom and the gener- osity that he has shown, not only by providing the premises for the purpose of MSC meetings, but by providing a meal for all the MSC members at every meeting. The MSC worked very

well over the year under the

‘Chairmanship’ of

Connie O’Sullivan and there was very good at- tendances at meeting with MSC members travelling significant distances to be

workers would like to wish Mary Carson - C.E.S. supervisor, a very happy retirement after her work and support towards the society over the past 20 years. A special evening was held for Mary and her

family on Friday 20th July

where huge praise was be- stowed on Mary from the Honorary Vice President, Brendan Cooney. A pres- entation was made to Mary of a beautiful

her out-

standing contribution to the society. The plaque will forever more take pride of

bouquet

of flowers, a crystal time piece and a special plaque acknowledging

present. In this past season the

MSC had what was a very active and successful playing season with more tournaments

than ever

before, with U18 and U21 tournaments, a Munster Doubles tournament, a Munster Masters (Over 40) tournament, a very popular

mediate tournament and an

upcoming Munster

Close snooker qualifier at Youghal CYMS followed by the Munster Final’s Weekend to be held in Fer- moy CYMS on Saturday the 1st

and Sunday the 2nd

of September. The MSC would like

to thank, Youghal CYMS, Fermoy CMWS, Douglas Snooker Club, The New Institute Snooker Club, the Crucible

Killarney Cue Club and Shooters Snooker

Snooker Club, Club

for their support over the season.

Finally the year which

was so successful ended on a very sad note as a great friend to many peo- ple and to Snooker Danny McGough sadly passed away and it had a devas- tating effect on everyone

place on the societies wall of fame. The contribution of FAS to the society was immense during her ten- ure. Mary oversaw teams of operatives who helped maintain various commu- nity organisations in town, the Youghal CYMS being just one of those. Mary has been a good friend to the Y.C.Y.M.S. over the years and the work by the CES can be seen in the well kept championship tables and the general running of

involved in the game. Danny was the most unassuming person I you could ever meet in snook- er. He was a lovely fella, friendly, polite, a good cra- ic and always a pleasure to be around. We will miss him a lot and now that Munster

the new snooker

championship is named in his memory I am cer- tain that never before will a tournament be more sought after, may he Rest in Peace.

the club. Mary gave a wonder- ful speech thanking the officers and CES workers and said she held the socie- ty in the highest of esteem. in the amount a Club rais- es can be a support mech- anism for team entries costs dependent on monies raised for entry fee support for the Munster Snooker Club
