Projects to Benefit from Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) funding – Minister Stanton
Three coastal com-
munity projects in Cork East have been awarded €45,261.42 of Fisheries Local Ac- tion Group (FLAG) funding, says Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton.
FLAG grants are co-funded by the Gov-
ernment and the Eu- ropean Union under Ireland’s European Maritime & Fisheries Fund (EMFF) Oper- ational Programme 2014-2020. This fund- ing is part of an EMFF funding package of €1.5 million recently announced by the Min- ister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D. and awarded to 106 coastal based projects.
“The FLAG initiative
is proving very success- ful and I was pleased to
see that three local pro- jects have been award- ed funding. These are: •Clean Coasts Bal- lynamona - environ- mental action group for the preservation of the marine environment in Ballycotton Bay and East Cork - €19,923.42 •Cobh Summer
Swing Festival - €2,356 •Eire Bass Cobh –
Cork Harbour saltwa- ter fly fishing business upgrade - €22,972
This funding to our
local projects will be a huge boost to our
coastal communities” revealed Minister Stan- ton.
Bord Iascaigh Mhara
(BIM) assists FLAGs to deliver this programme via grant-aid, training and on the ground fa- cilitation, with dedi- cated regional FLAG coordinators in each region. Successful pro- jects included invest- ments in micro seafood enterprises, marine tourism and marine lei- sure projects, heritage projects, small harbour facilities, and environ-
mental and training projects.

Cobh Municipality Councillors are to review a decision by the Local Au- thority to close off a pop- ular stretch of coastline which has been a public right of way for genera- tions. The Battery Strand, to
close Garden the near the
Titanic Holy
Ground, Cobh, was per- manently closed in recent weeks. The Local Authority say
they took the move to per- manently weld the access gate shut, following fears for public safety after nu- merous attempts to restrict access over the past 4 years have failed.
Municipality Execu-
tive Officer Paraig Lynch told the July Sitting of the Authority €12million had been invested by the Department of the En-
vironment, Cork County Council and Cobh Town Council to secure
that are at risk. The Executive Clerk
said the cliff adjacent to the Battery Strand walk- way was one of a number of locations that failed to attract sufficient funding. “Originally the gate was
locked. The lock was cut off- we restored the lock. A stronger one was cut off. The gate was taken a number of times, and dumped.” A report by Malachy
Walsh and Partners in 2014 on walls and slopes across the Island found that the Battery Strand cliff was among a number of locations in the town that were in immediate danger of collapse, and strongly urged that access be restricted. Cllr Diarmaid O’Cadh-
la raised the issue under Any Other Business at

the July Sitting of the Borough and asked that a decision be made that the area should be reopened. The Independent Cllr said a report should be commissioned detailing what is required to re-es- tablish the public access. Cllr Cathal Rasmussen
said he could see both sides of the argument. The Labour Cllr said
the steps are damaged, the platform onto the beach is gone, so from a Health and Safety point it was right to close the access. He said “it’s a crying shame to see it locked up.
“ Executive Clerk Paraig
Lynch said he would urge Cllrs to defer a decision on restoring access un- til September, when he would have an opportuni- ty to furnish them with the Malachy Walsh report.
