The accountancy and financial advisory firm IFAC

called on the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D. to immediately con- vene a meeting of lenders to seek reassurance that there are appropriate credit facilities available to farmers over the com- ing months as the farming

sector faces the prospect of a very difficult and costly winter. John Donoghue IFAC

CEO said; “In recent weeks our teams around the country are meeting more and more farmers anxious about being able to meet their financial commitments this year. The heatwave has meant that many are burning

through their winter fod- der stocks as on farm grass growth has stalled. Farmers are desperately trying to figure out how to source and finance new fodder supplies for the winter. With silage cur- rently priced at €45 per bale and little prospect of grass growth as the drought continues, feed- ing is very challenging

this year after last year’s prolonged winter. On top of that, many farmers, particularly dairy farm- ers, will have to deal with a larger than average tax bill this year on the back of strong milk prices in 2017. Agricultural mer- chants have been gen- erously supplying credit to farmers to help them through in recent months

IFAC call on Minister Creed to Convene Emergency Meeting of Lenders

but that can’t go on forev- er. Together all of these factors are building up to create a perfect financial storm that many farm families will struggle to manage.” “Our professionals are

currently flat out sup- porting farmers, offering practical financial ad- vice and putting fodder and cash flow budgets

in place but we can all see where this is headed. Many farmers are finding it difficult to get access to credit at manageable rates and this needs urgent at- tention. Minister Creed should immediately con- vene a meeting of lend- ers to seek reassurance that there are appropriate credit facilities available to farmers over the com-

ing months. The banks and other lending insti- tutions are traditionally good farming partners. It’s important that they display maximum flexibil- ity and understanding in dealing with farm families who are doing their best to manage costs in what is turning out to be an exceptionally costly and stressful year.”

by MICHEAL BUCKLEY Over the past year, Gl-

anmire Macra set out to give back more to our community. It was one of our main goals at the be- ginning of the year. Chair- person Sarah O Connell said “as an organisation we always want to give back to our community as a thank you for their con- tinued support, without which we would struggle to remain in operation. We are incredibly fortunate to receive support from Glan- mire as a whole when we are fundraising, organising charity events or looking for the sponsorship and it’s important to give back to them.”

Engaging the Commu-

nity Towards the end of

November, with Christ- mas fast approaching we decided to have a stand promoting what we do. We were able to secure a

spot in Ryan’s Supervalu, at the Glanmire Christmas Craft Fair. It was a great opportunity for the club to inform the people about the different aspects of Macra na Feirme. A num- ber of people were certain that Macra was only for people with an agricultural background. As a club we were able to explain that agriculture was one of 6 pillars of Macra but there was more to it than just farming.

Christmas Time – Com-

munity Involvement Christmas is a wonder-

ful time in the year to give back to the local commu- nity. During this time of year we host two charity/ fundraising events. First up is our woodcutting ini- tiative. As the winter sets in and the cold weather dominates our forecast, we always try to care for some of the elderly providing some wood in the Glan- mire area.

We pride ourselves in supporting our locality. So not only did we source, chop and split the timber, we continued the personal approach of hand deliver- ing bags to those most in need. Sticking with annu- al traditions, we continued our now annual custom of having a charity fund- raiser with our Christmas themed quiz.

The quiz too place in

the Stirrup Bar, White’s Cross, on Thursday 7 De- cember for the Dunman- way Day Oncology Unit in Cork University Hospital (CUH). Unfortunately the reality is that most people know someone who had or has cancer, with some people sadly having lost people to the disease. As a club we recognised this sad truth but with improved treatments, many more are now surviving cancer.

The Dunmanway Day

Unit was created predomi- nately for the use of outpa- tients, meaning that it al- lows users of the service to come in get treatment, and ideally go home following treatment. Because cancer has af-

fected many of our mem- bers, as a club we decided to use our Christmas Quiz to raise money specifically for the Dunmanway Day Unit. The idea is the mon- ey raised will be donated to the unit directly to provide some additional comfort to a user of the service. We proudly presented

a cheque to the value of €2645 to Pat McCarthy of the Dunmanway Day Unit from the fundraiser. Club Treasurer Liz Daly O Dowd said, “that we were delighted to raise so much money for such an incred- ible service. A massive thank you to club mem- bers and the local commu- nity for the support”

Bake Sale and 5k Pit Tel: 021 463 8000 • Email: info@eastcorkjournal.ie • Web: www.eastcorkjournal.ie

Stops We hosted a bake sale

on the last Sunday of April with the funds going to- wards the Irish Pilgrimage Fund. After the weekend mass, the congregation were asked to support the cause by buying some freshly baked goods pre- pared by a number of our members. With tea and coffee being served, it was a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon for all who at- tended.

On the day we raised

€215 and as a club we de- cided to donate the mon- ey to the Irish Pilgrim- age Fund who will use it towards to Lourdes this summer. Club member Michael O Donovan will be going on the trip this summer and was the one to suggest donating to the cause.

Then in mid-May we

arranged our now annual 5k road race. Capitalising

on the popularity of run- ning, our 5k serves as our biggest club fundraiser for the year. This allows us to continue to operate as a club for the forthcoming year.

The race was coordi-

nated by club member and seasoned runner Sean Ahern, who with the help of Will Daly mapped out the route of our race. Tak- ing place on a sunny Tues- day afternoon 125 keen runners and walkers took part. The race went off without a hitch as the run- ners and walkers navigated the course. The fastest male on the day was Sean O Sullivan from Carrig- navar in a time of 17.30, while Sharon Rynee from the Killmurry-Bricken ath- letics club was the faster fe- male with a time of 19.41.

As a fundraiser we re-

turned a profit of €475. This money will be rein- vested into the club to al-

low us to run throughout the year. The success of this race is in part due to our high level of commu- nity engagement. With pride ourselves in getting to know our locality and this greatly aids all fund- raising efforts that we do as a club. As a club we succeeded in actively en- gaging in our community and would like to thank the locality for all it’s support over the last 12 months. We look forward to further strengthening our relation- ship over the next year.

Our summer bowling

league will be starting this Monday 23.07.18 in Lei- sureplex at 9pm. The cost is €10.. This is a great introduction to Ma- cra and if anyone wants to get nvolved, feel free to contact us on find us on Facebook https://www. facebook.com/glan- miremacranafeirme/ or contact our secretary Gil- lian on 0877558026.
