Blackrock 0-23 St Colmans 1-12

by DEREK KIELY BLACKROCK were

definitely good value for their eight point victory over St Colmans in the Cork County U21HC last Saturday evening where the Rockies clicked in the second half to run out very comfortable winners. The first quarter of this

game was very even with both sides tied at three points apiece and it took the sides a little while to adjust to the very hard pitch. Then the Rockies started

to move forward with a Mi- chael O’Halloran free and a couple of fine scores from Ciaran Cormack and Liam O’Sullivan. To their credit Colmans

responded well to the slight domination of Blackrock towards the end of the first half with Brian O’Shea pointing three frees with- out reply and just a solitary score separated the sides at the break. The second half started

with a bang for St Colmans when Brian Walsh skipped past two defenders on the right wing then fired the ball low into the Blackrock goal to give his side a two point lead.

Blackrock responded bril-

liantly and in a four min- ute spell they carved the St

Colmans defence apart with five points without response from John O’Sullivan, Joe Golden, Mark O’Keefe and a brace from O’Halloran. St Colmans responded

through their talisman Bri- an O’Shea, but Blackrock for the remainder of the game were holding about 80% of the possession and were hitting with accuracy time after time. The Rockies pointed ten

further times as opposed to St Colmans who could only muster three more points in the final quarter. The final four minute saw

second half sub Alan Con- nolly, O’Halloran, O’Keefe and Paul Kennedy score freely and considering it is only the first round of the PMHC maybe already the sides like Blackrock, Sars- fields and Douglas look like they will be the ones to beat as for St Colmans, well Donal Og Cusack I am sure will have his young St Col- mans side well drilled and ready for the back door .

Scorers for Blackrock:

M O’Halloran 0-10 (8f) M O’Keefe 0-4, J O’Sullivan, C Cormack and L O’Sulli- van 0-2 each, J Golden, A Connolly and P Kennedy 0-1 each.

Blackrock manager John

Cormack spoke after his team’s pretty impressive opening round win against St Colmans last Saturday in Carrigtwohill in the Cork County Premier U21 HC’ John Cormack thinks that his side didn’t get going un- til the second half “I don’t think we particularly im- proved a whole lot in the first half and we didn’t real- ly improve that much either in the second quarter , look- ing back at last Saturday, the first half was a bit of a war of attrition with both sides struggling for scores. Out of their first half tally six of their first half seven points were frees, we might of got a

couple form play ourselves. I don’t think it was really un- til the third quarter that we began to really play and im- pose ourselves in the match. We made a couple of posi- tional switches at half time and it worked for us. I think that Ian Cahill was a big threat against us in the first half and we had to nullify that and we managed to do that and that in my opinion had a huge impact on the game”. There was no doubt but

the last quarter definitely belonged to the ‘Rockies’ who looked devastating in attack and very solid in de- fence, Cormack added “In the third quarter we looked a lot more relaxed and really began to hurl like a team. It is very hard to put an U21 side together with the de- mands from ‘Senior, Inter- mediate and Junior’ teams within our club all looking for players, but last Satur-

day evening particularly in the last quarter they looked more like a team to me”. The second half couldn’t

have started any worse for Blackrock who conceded a goal within 60 seconds, but Cormack was impressed with how his side reacted “It wasn’t ideal, but the lads re- sponded brilliantly there was no panic, a lot of those lads play senior hurling, so they were never going to worry too much with 29 minutes of hurling still to be played, but it was great that they re- sponded so quickly. Fair play to St Colmans, they came with a plan and it probably worked for about 40 min- utes, when you play with a sweeper system you tend to have lees possession and are less of a scoring threat and once we had so much of the ball we were always going to be more in control and we benefited from that. We won’t probably play again

Bride Rovers v St Catherines U21AHC

Bride Rovers 1-17 St Catherines 0-13

by DEREK KIELY CONOR Barry was

incredible for Bride Rov- ers in their East Cork U21A Championship group game victory over St Catherines in Castlely- ons last Friday night and Rovers are now all but booked into the semi-final after this win in a game where the sides were level on six occasions, but a goal from the Bride Rovers tal- isman on the 46th

minute

changed the game in Bride Rovers favour and the men

from Rathcormac finished this one off in style. The first half was very

entertaining on the fairly short pitch where posses- sion was at a premium. Rovers dominated the first quarter in that regard with three early points from Brian Roche, Conor Bar- ry and Jesse O’Keefe, with just one monster free from the Saints goalkeeper Eoin Davis in reply. Barry and Roche point-

ed again for Rovers, with Richard Galvin pointing on the first quarter mark

to keep his side in touch. Then on the 16th

minute

St Catherines went into overdrive six scores with- out reply, three from Rory Galvin and another brace of long frees from the Saints goalie Eoin Davis. In a very tight last five

minutes of the first half Rovers came back with three late points, but St Catherines kept the lead at the narrowest of margins at the short whistle with a late Galvin free. The second half was

a cracker with both sides level on three occasions with some fine scores, one in particular on the 37th minute when Bride Rovers Jesse O’Keefe kicked the sliotar over the bar from

fifteen meters out to raise a white flag. The turning point came

on the three quarter mark when Barry received a ball in the left corner, then he cut inside two defenders and buried the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the St. Cathe- rines goal. Richard Galvin point-

ed back immediately for the Saints, but it was to be their last score of the game as Bride Rovers killed the game off with three more Barry frees, a point from Eoin Roche and anoth- er point for O’Keefe in a great game of hurling.
