On August 17 and 18, CRY104fm are their 2nd

holding annual Spin-a-

thon and Radiothon. Last year’s event was a tremen- dous success and raised €9,000. Speaking with The East Cork Journal, Lin-

da O’Connell from CRY said, “The

Spin-a-Thon

will be the same format as last year. Teams were very competitive so it was great fun!” The idea of the Spin-a-Thon is that a group of between 2-4 peo- ple cycle, between them, over an hour and the team with the

most mileage

clocked up wins €500 for the charity, community group/ non-profit organi- sation of their choice. The main rule is that only ONE member of the team can be a member of a cycling club. It costs €40 to enter a team. Exercise bikes fit- ted with odometers will be stationed outside John

Spin-a-Thon in Youghal

Kennedy’s shop from Fri- day morning until Satur- day evening. Slots go fast so be sure to get signed up quickly. €40 to be in with a chance to win €500 for a great cause is always worth the punt! Last year’s win- ning team included Peter Queally, Frances Wiggins and Trevor Montgomery

Annual

who, between them, cov- ered 31.4km and handed the €500 prize money to Down Syndrome Cork. Alongside

the Spin-a-

Thon, CRY’s Radiothon starts on the Friday morn- ing at 9am and continues non-stop for 50 hours. Plenty

chat, music and stories from locals to keep

Youghal’s Queen of the Sea Chloe Dempsey, A Truly Worthy Queen

by CLAIRE O’DONOGHUE that 18 year

There’s no denying old Chloe

Dempsey, winner of this year’s Youghal Queen of the Sea Festival, is abso- lutely

stunning. Howev-

er, the external beauty is enhanced by the bright, charming, intelligent, fun- ny girl shining through. As she spoke with The East Cork Journal, it was evi- dent that she is destined for great things. She manages to have both a bubbly per- sonality, quiet confidence and, all in all, just a lovely way about her. “I was de- lighted when Gráinne at Tangled asked me to rep- resent them at the Festival. I get my hair done there all the time so it felt nice to be able to do something for them. I was fairly nerv- ous though!” Daunting to say the least, for anyone to be interviewed one to one and then have to face an audience of locals and speak in public.

Having just completed

her Leaving Cert, it’s now an anxious wait for Chloe and her school friends as results day on August 15 approaches. Chloe’s plans to move to Limerick in September to pursue a college degree and H-Dip in secondary teaching, specialising in Irish and Geography. “It’ll take 6 years in all,” she said “if I get the points I need. One of my friends since child-

hood, Lizzie Perry is going too which is great. Right now, we’re

looking for-

ward to our Graduation on August 9. My date is another best friend, Tier- nan McCarthy”.

As she prepares to rep-

resent all that is young and talented in Youghal over the next year as Queen of the Sea, Chloe’s first official duty is to attend an event in Green Park on August 8 in aid of cancer.

“It’s a great cause”, said Chloe, “I’m delighted to go and be a part of it”. Her win at the Festival includes a cash prize of €500 and automatic en- try into the Cork Rose of Tralee competition. Chloe Dempsey is a

credit to her family and community and we,

the East Cork Journal, wish her every success in the future and a great reign as Youghal’s Queen of the Sea.
