Youghal Garden Tea Party in aid of Lourdes Assisted Pilgrims Fund

by CLAIRE O’ DONOGHUE & ANDREA CUNNINGHAM

The idyllic surrounds of the secret garden behind Neville’s clothing shop, was the perfect setting for the Garden Tea Party held on Wednesday, 18 July in aid of the Lourdes Assisted Pilgrims Fund. Tables were set with white cloths, vintage tea sets, and plate after plate of homemade cakes. There, between bountiful pink rose bushes, flowers beds and trees, lo- cals sat chatting and enjoy- ing each other’s company on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Youghal.

Speaking with the East Cork Journal Ann Neville

(organiser), said “Our sister, Mary, went as a volunteer for many years and always loved going to Lourdes. I went along once after she passed away and the atmosphere there was just amazing. Anyone who goes and sees what it’s like – just gets it.” Ann has been going every year since with the Cloyne Di- ocesan Pilgrimage -which is one of the largest groups from Ireland going every June. The Garden Tea Party raised an amazing €3,800. All proceeds will go towards a fund that assists local infirm, ill, elderly or disabled trav- ellers, who may not have the full financial resources for the trip. The group

that travel each June are all volunteers, paying for their own trip, and all the while on hand to give any other travellers assistance. “Every year”, said Ann, “there are between 600- 700 people that travel from June 1 – June 6. It really is a huge event every year.” Ann and her family would like to thank all who attended the Garden Party and donated to the cause, and all those who helped out or contributed in any way. Main raffle winners on the day were Christine Faul, Mary McAuliffe, Marion McCarthy and Amy Collins. Congratula- tion to all involved.
