February 2018 East Cork Athletics

Ballymore Cobh Athletics Club

An early race time of 09:30 didn’t hinder the en- thusiasm of a cluster of our members who made the short journey to Cloyne for race number 4 in the 5 race Cloyne Commons Series. Most of our participants

had traversed this course in the past, so were well aware that this short 4 km course over very flat terrain in the Cloyne hinterland offered every chance of a fast time.

All the more so, given that there was hardly a wisp of wind to hinder one’s efforts. A number of personal times (pb) were thus

best

attained. Well done to all who ran amongst the 200 competi- tors. Stephen

way, with a slightly later start, a troupe of 4 Bally- more Cobh members were amongst the 317 who took on the challenging Carri- galine 5 Mile Race, hosted by Eagle A.C. In similar weather con-

ditions to Cloyne of cloudy skies and drizzle, the Car- rigaline runners had a tad

more to contend with in the form of several testing hills and drags throughout the course. It didn’t seem to have any

effect on Tom O’Riordan, though, as he registered a splendid pb on the day. Felicitations, so, to the Ballymore

Cobh Carri-

galine quartet: Tom O’Riordan 46th

East Cork Cycling The

Youghal Cycling Club continuing

poor

weather is testing the resolve of even the most motivated of club members this year. The Dirty roads, filthy bikes and club kit will hopefully soon be behind us as the noticeable stretch in the eve- nings continues to increase.

The 20-22kmph Group On Sunday morning a

group of 5 headed out for a nice loop around East Cork. From Lidl they headed out the Bog Road on to Ladys- bridge, Garyvoe cross and on to Ballymaloe. Through Cloyne and Midleton for the coffee stop. The home run was via Mogeely and Kil- leagh. A nice 60km covered.

The route home was via Waterrock and from there the main road back through Killeagh. A nice uneventful 75km completed.

The Spinning Group. With John Treacy as road

captain, the spinning group stayed in East Cork for Sat- urday’s outing. A group of 8 left Lidl at 9am .They head- ed out the Bog road, on to Fanisk

Ballymaloe. Shanagarry for the coffee

,Castlemartyr,Mogeely and on to

Groups 1 and 2. 9 Club Members from

Groups 1 and 2 headed off a 9am from Lidl. They headed out the

,Ladysbridge and then Garyvoe Killeagh before

the run back to Youghal.A handy 60km. On Sunday morning the spinning group headed off around East Cork for a nice 75km loop. Out to Killeagh, through Mogeely on to the Two Mile Inn. Midleton was next and through Bar- ryscourt for tea

before stopping at Carraigtwohill.

Quarry road and to the Windy Gap. Up to Mount Uniacke and from there to Murley’s cross. The planned route was from Tallow and up to Ballyduff but due to multiple visits from the puncture

fairy the group

headed directly to Lismore for refreshments. The route home was a run through Deerpark, over Camphire bridge and up to Knocka- nore cross. From here they decended through Glendine and home for a nice 75km in the bag.

Group Spins Our weekend schedule is

as follows: On Sundays at 10am we

have a group that will roll out from Lidl and cover a 30-50km route at a very comfortable pace for anyone looking to take up cycling. Another group rolls out

from Lidl at 9am on Satur- day, 9am on Sunday and is led by John Treacy. This group does a really good job of introducing people to road and group cycling. They set various sportive’s and weekend training camps as targets. They work the group pace so as all meet

these various targets.

At this time of year, they will cover 60-80km routes at an average speed of 25-27kph on fairly level routes. This is a brilliant group for those who want to improve their general

cycling capability and enjoy the camaraderie

of Club cycling! Finally we have a group

that also rolls out from Lidl at 9am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Typical- ly this group is made up of

the more experienced Club cyclists.

As with the other

group their objective at this time of year is getting in the base miles for the coming season. Their spins are sim-

ilar to the other group but just a couple of km faster. So for anyone feeling a little strong in the other groups, this is an ideal time of year to jump across.
