Collins Calls for Law To Combat TV Violence
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
The Minister for Com-
munication Denis Naugh- ten, has been asked to give increased powers to the Broadcasting
Complaints
Commission, to deal with the spike in deadly vio- lence on TV and in online gaming. The move comes fol-
lowing concerns raised by Councillor Noel Collins, that the disturbing trend in violence on TV, and in video games, is fuelling aggression and anti-social behaviour in communities. The independent
told the February sitting of Cork County Council, tougher laws are required as programmes depicting domestic violence, family disputes and brutal mur- ders are all too prevalent on our TV screens. He said children learn from both experience and
social learning or role Cllr
modelling. When young children see violence on TV they have difficulty dif- ferentiating between what is real and what is fantasy. The call has been backed by Fine Gael Cllr Anthony Barry, he said “in recent years there has been a desensitisation of violence and the effect that has on young people. On primetime TV what is projected as normal family life has a huge violent bit circling around it and it’s not acceptable.” Independent Cllr Mar- cia Dalton said “research has shown that people who watch a lot of violence on television become de- sensitised to the pain and suffering of others. They become more afraid gen- erally and become more aggressive to others. Those who engage in watching violent
televi- sion are also more likely
to commit criminal acts by the age of 30.” Fine Gael Cllr Mary
Hegarty agreed she said “we have to re-educate our children that a more car- ing society is better than such a violent society. Mayor of Cork County
Declan Hurley also lent his backing to the motion. Mayor Hurley said “pre-
vention is better than cure and it highlights a lot of is- sues we are dealing with in society now a days.”

National School Some weeks ago I was deeply honoured to receive 31 beau- tifully written letters from 8 year old students in St. Brigid’s National School and delivered to me by their teacher Mrs Bernie Herlihy. The theme of all the letters were similar, thanking me for my work in the community, seeing me on my bike etc. etc. The teacher asked me to go up to the school to talk to the students which I did, last week, and they were joined by 2 other classes so the questions were many and varied and they told me of their interest in sporting events. Two other teachers joined us Mrs Sheila Murphy, Principal & Mrs Mary Barry. The students enter- tained us with their beautiful singing – i.e. “There is a song for every season”, “God loves us everyone”, I’ll tell me Ma” and of course “The Banks” just to name but a few. They danced and a few girls performed gymnastics – A great day, memorable for me and I would hope that the students enjoyed it. Thank you to the teachers and to all the very lovely mannerly students.
