February 2018 Gaelscoil Mhainistir Na Corann Honoured To Be Part Of Laureate Na nOg’s Big Picture Project

by DENIS O FLYNN On Friday 9 Febru-

ary, Laureate na nOg, PJ Lynch was joined by a team of Ireland’s top children’s illustrators to kick off a weekend of mu- ral making on the walls of Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann in Midleton, County Cork. This adventure in mu- ral making is one of the key events in PJ Lynch’s Laureate na nOg Big Pic- ture Project. The artists transformed

the interior walls of the school over the weekend and by the time the school

reopened on Monday 12 February, it was a virtu- al art gallery – featuring beautiful artworks in a va- riety of styles and vibrant colours. The artworks were in-

spired by the school’s 503 pupils who took part in a series of technicolour Monster Doodles with the artists, during which each and every child

drew

a picture on giant rolls of paper laid out in the school hall. On Saturday and Sun- /11th

day (10th February)

the team of artists were hard at work in the school, painting, sketching, doo-

dling and stencilling the school’s walls. On Monday

in one place, and for one weekend only. Fair

play (12th

February) the school re- opened and the staff and pupils saw for the first time the complete trans- formation of their school. The artists joining PJ

Lynch for this Big Picture Project were Niamh Shar- key, Chris Judge, Lauren O’Neill, and Marie-Lou- ise Fitzpatrick Speaking of the Mid- leton Big Picture

Pro-

ject, Laureate na nOg PJ Lynch said: “What a joy it is for me as Laureate to bring all

these great Irish illustrators together

to Niamh, Chris, Lauren, and Marie-Louise for em- bracing the challenge of transforming the school in just a weekend. The pu- pils and staff at Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann are full of passion and great ideas, so I know it would be a brilliant, colourful weekend, and we will now leave them with a perma- nent

art collection that

they can enjoy every day of their school lives.” Principal of Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann Mairead Ui Fhloinn said: “We are privileged to have

some wonderful artists visiting our school, work- ing with the children and leaving us with our very own art collection which will act as an inspiration to both teachers and pu- pils long into the future. We would like to thank all who were involved in bringing the “Big Pic- ture “project to Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann, especially our own muin- teoir Grainne who was the driving force in getting The Big Picture to us. We love the finished works which reflect the wonder- ful spirit which permeates our school community”.
