sport@eastcorkjournal.ie Strong Second Half See Cork Take The Points

Cork 1-12 Carlow 0-03

by SHIRLEY MOLONEY

Fixture: Littlewoods

Ireland Camogie Leagues Division 2 Round 1 Teams: Cork v Carlow Venue: CIT Date: Sunday 18th

Feb- ruary 2018

The Play: It took a second half

goal from Caitriona Col- lins to set up a victory for Cork after a very fragment- ed and scrappy opening 30 minutes in the Littlewoods Ireland Division 2 fixture

played at CIT on Sunday last

between Cork and

newly promoted Carlow. It was very much a new look Cork side with many new recruits and changes from the side that

take victory on the day. The visitors opened the

scoring through Eleanor Treacy when she slotted over a 30 metre free on 2 before Keeva McCarthy pointed a placed ball to level proceedings 2 min- utes later.

Cork pushed lined

out in last years All Ireland intermediate final. Cork lead at the break by three, however, there were long spells without scores as the outfield battle proved chal- lenging with tricky under- foot conditions. The sec- ond half, however, sprung to life when Collins goaled shortly after the resump- tion and set Cork up to

one clear on nine when McCarthy converted after a foul on Maeve McCarthy 30 metres from the target. The sides were level again on 13 when Tracey point- ed her second and Car- lows final score of the half when she pointed a 45 me- tre placed ball. With the surface proving awkward, passing less than fluent and scores hard to come by it took a Keeva McCar- thy 20 metre free to nudge Cork one clear on 21. As

the half progressed Cork looked to be getting a han- dle on things when a string of passes saw Katelyn Hickey point on 26 before Maeve McCarthy split the posts after Katie McCar- thy set her up with a great handpass. Cork headed to the dressing room 1-05 to 0-02 to the good. The second half sprung

to life within two minutes when a long range delivery from Aoife Kavanagh saw Kate Kinsella come off her line only to mis control into the path of Caitriona Collins who was on hand to calmly slot past the keeper into the net. Five minutes later Keelagh

fired home from close range to extend Corks lead to seven. Carlow mustered

when they overcame a spir- ited Tipperary side at CIT on Sunday last. There was little separating the sides until Linda Collins fired to the net on 17 to push Cork five clear. Cork registered scores through eight differ- ent players in Contrast to Tipperary who were heav- ily reliant on the exception free taking of Cait Devane who tallied 11 of which 9 came from placed balls over the hour. Devane

opened the scoring when she split the

posts before a Cork brace from Collins and Lib- by Coppinger saw Cork hit the front on 3. Dev- ane and Orla Cotter ex- changed frees before Meg- an Ryan drew Tipp level on 9 when she fired over from range. Two finely struck Amy O’Connor points either side of a Cot- ter long range effort saw Cork go three clear be- fore Devane put over a 50 metre free on 14. Collins struck for goal on 17 after Orla Cronin found her with a pass 20 metres from goal. Still with some work to do Collins side stepped the defence and made no mistake in rattling the Tip- perary net. Two Devane

a solitary point through a Treacy placed ball from 40 metres on 44 before Cork registered six unanswered points in the final 11 min- utes. Collins split the posts from close range

before

Maeve McCarthy put over a fine effort on the run to see Cork 1-08 to 0-03 ahead on 51. Keeva Mc- Carthy pointed a 40 metre free before pointing from play a minute

later on

57. Caroline Sugrue and Maeve McCarthy closed out the scoring in the final two minutes with two well taken points to see Cork take the spoils and get off to a winning start in their first outing of the season.

leen Sheehan operating a wing back struck the first of the four, before Cotter from distance, O’Connor on the run and Lauren Homan drilled over the fourth to see Cork stamp their

authority on the

game on the cusp of half time. A brace of Devane 20 metres frees closed the scoring for the half with Tipperary trailing 0-08 to 1-10. Within a minute of the Hannah Looney

Orla Cronin got on the score sheet on 44 after she was on the end of some great passing that started with Ashling Thompson in defence. Another Loon- ey point saw Cork 1-14 to 0-10 ahead with 12 re- maining. A Devane free from 65 metres sailed over before she pointed from play on 56 to once again cut the deficit to five. Two Cork goals either side of a Devane 35 metre free in the closing three minutes from O’Connor and Lau- ren Homan saw Cork close

out the game in a flurry before Cotter rounded off the scoring with a 30 metre free. Cork registered their third consecutive win on a scoreline of Cork 3-15 to Tipperary 0-13.
