sport@eastcorkjournal.ie East Cork Soccer Notes Hard luck to our Midleton F.C.

Beamish cup 1st Rnd result Mayfield 0-2 Midleton Goalscorers: Jake He-

garty Kelvin Kruschel A Tricky day back up in

Mayfield today , playing a team for a second week in a row is always a tough assignment, but Midleton stood the task well with a very commanding perfor- mance, Midleton should really have been two goals to the good at half time but only for some excel- lent

the Mayfield keeper to keep out

striking over 12yrds just before

goalkeeping from Jake Hegarty

on both occasions. Bobby O’Donoghue came close just

from half

time HT 0-0 . Midleton opened the

scoring finally on the hour , after Hegarty again came close twice, missing

fractionally, but a piece of magic from Tijani struck a wonder ball cross field for

O’Donoghue who

controlled well and played a superb early cross to pick out Hegarty who slammed home to open the scoring. James Leahy nearly made it two min- utes later but somehow a deflection from a May- field player sent it past the bottom corner to every- one’s amazement. Mayfield came close

themselves shortly after but Midleton Keeper Ray Savage stopped well low to his right out for a cor- ner.

Midleton did make it

two from a scrappy piece of play young left back Cillian O’Brien spotted a disjointed Mayfield back three and played in Kelvin Kruschel and he made no mistake lobbing the keep- er from a tight angle with a very confident finish to wrap up the tie.

Well done lads great re-

sult, and once again mas- sive contribution from the whole squad, with injuries and

suspensions never

hampering the team over the last number of weeks. Next round is away to Carrigaline or Park Utd

U16 Girls Cup Midleton 2 Wilton 5

A difficult fixture for

our girls against a strong Premier division side. Falling behind after only 10 minutes our girls worked really hard from start to finish. Lily pulled one back for us after fall- ing 3 behind with a love- ly finish which was no more than we deserved as we created several good chances. After going in at the break 5-1 down the girls put in a super shift in the second half to win the second half with a great goal scored by Ra- chel after some nice team play to create the chance.

More chances were creat- ed and it was a very even second half. A big thanks to Deara, Mischa and Chi Chi who took up the dif- ficult goalkeepers role for the day.
