Allianz Hurling League Round 3 Clare 0-23 Cork 0-19
Cork travelled to Ennis
last Sunday for their 3rd round of the Allianz hurl- ing league, with a win and a loss in their opening two games. John Meyler made a few changes with a new midfield pairing of Mark Ellis and Luke Meade teaming up while Robbie O’Flynn from Erin’s Own was given another chance at wing forward. Kanturk’s Darren Brown came in at wing back while his club-
mate Anthony Nash re- turned between the posts. Cork had two late changes with Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane forced out with Daniel Kearney and Shane Kingston coming in.
Clare had two wins over
Tipperary and Kilkenny prior to this third outing so the home side were fully intent on victory and by half time they were well on their way. Peter Dug-
gan, John Conlon, Tony Kelly and Colm Galvin were prominent through- out the opening half for the home side, shooting some splendid points. In contrast Cork, apart from the opening ten minutes were struggling in attack with just two points from play and just one forward scoring in an opening half, where Cork were over-run at midfield. As a result, the home side made full use of the chances that came their way, leading by 0-7 to 0-4 after the opening quarter, but by half -time the lead was out to eleven points,
Ellis all scored fine
as Cork could muster just one point from Horgan in the second quarter. Seam- ie Harnedy did come close to a goal but Donal Touhy advanced quickly to put it out for a 65 which Hor- gan put wide. Indeed, the Glen Rovers star was not as sharp as usual and at half-time Cork really had a mountain to climb as they trailed by 0-16 to 0-5. Cork introduced Lor- cain Mcloughlin at mid- field for the second half and
they did begin to
play better as Horgan, Tim O’Mahony, Robbie O’Flynn and Mark
Allianz Hurling League: Other Matches
Tipperary 3-21 Wexford 1-21
On Saturday night in
Thurles Wexford’s win- ning run came to a halt as Tipperary got the bet- ter
of Davy Fitzgerald’s
side in a very entertaining match. Wexford’s failure to take their goal chances
was the difference as Tip- perary with Jason Forde outstanding
took theirs
leaving both Wexford and Tipperary with two wins while Clare who defeated Cork on Sunday are out in front with three wins.
Waterford 1-12 Kilkenny 1-20
Waterford are the only
side yet to win a match as they suffered a third defeat at
the hands of Kilkenny
in Walsh Park on Sunday and with just two games against leaders Clare and Cork to come, relegation
is now a possibility, unless Derek McGrath’s side pick up points. It is well known that Waterford are not tak- ing the league too serious- ly, but winning becomes a habit, and so too does los- ing so Waterford will need
Allianz Hurling League Cork v Waterford at 3.00pm
The Cork hurlers will wel- come Waterford in the 4th round of the hurling league, with the visitors after three rounds, both sides will want to win for different reasons. With championship edging closer both sides will be hoping for
victory. To date Waterford have lost to Wexford, Tipper- ary and Kilkenny and with a final game against table top- pers Clare to come, Waterford will see this as a must win con- test if they are to avoid relega- tion. Cork on the other hand
will want to get the win as they have Tipperary in their final game, so we should certainly be in for a good contest. Cork will be the slight favourite on home ground but this is a game that could go either way.
Waterford And Cavan On Leeside Next Weekend In Allianz Leagues
Sunday February 25th Cork footballers will host
Cavan this Sunday in the first of a double bill and early com- ers should be in for an exciting contest. Since losing to Tipper- ary, Cork travelled North and came away with a fine result

in Down. This was followed by victory over Louth and now in their third home game the rebels face a strong Cavan side. Cavan got the better of Meath last week so they will certainly be a tough opponent for Ron-

an McCarthy’s side. Cork are using the league to blood new players and so far it is working. Hopefully on Sunday Cork can continue their good form but Cavan will be a serious test for them.

to get back on track against Cork and Clare and both are very difficult fixtures. Last Sunday’s game turned when Patrick Curran might have got a penalty. The ball was cleared and at the other end TJ Reid
scored a goal to push Kilk- enny six points clear. Wa- terford again came back with Curran this time win- ning a penalty but Stephen Bennett’s weak shot was easily saved by Eoin Mur- phy in the Kilkenny goal.
From there to the finish, Kilkenny were happy to keep their noses in front as a disappointing Water- ford suffered a third defeat, with Wexford, Tipperary and now Kilkenny getting the better of the Deise side.
Championship Begins This Coming WEEKEND
The East Cork GAA Board will commence its champi- onship season when the U21 football competitions, in A, B, and C championships get underway this coming week- end. Just two games are down for decision in the A grade where Glanmire will welcome Fr O’Neill’s to Sallybrooke on Friday night. The home side who have two teams at this age group will be fancied to advance but Fr O’Neill’s could give them a run for their money. Down in Rostellan also on
Friday night defending cham- pions Aghada might not have it all their own way against Glenville, but on home soil Aghada would be fancied to win. There are four games down
for decision in the C cham- pionship and these can go either way with Carrig Na
bhFear, Cobh, Lisgoold and Carrigtwohill predicted to win.
In the U21 B grade just two
matches are set to take place with St Colman’s and Erin’s Own given the nod to come out on top. It is very early in the season so there is really no form to go on as such so we will have to wait and see who makes it through. As always please check with
your club as to the time and venue as with weather etc some games could be subject to change.

points. The problem was that Clare were matching them with Donal Reidy, Seanaidh Morey, Michael O’Malley and Duggan on target and with twenty minutes remaining there was still just six points be- tween the sides with Clare in front by 0-19 t0 0-13. Cork continued to bat-
tle hard and points from Seamie
Harnedy and
Patrick Horgan cut the gap still further, but the goal Cork needed would not come. Donal Touhy saved from a Horgan free, while the Clare Custodian also denied Cork sub Bri- an Lawton late on. In the end Clare were deserving
winners as points from David Reidy, Tony Kel- ly and Peter Duggan got them their third win in a row, while for Cork it is a second defeat on the road. Cork’s poor opening half left them with too much to do, while the failure to find the net was another mark against an attack that nev- er really got going. Cork: P Horgan 0-12,
