we were met by local man Ted

O’Brien, born and

reared under the shad- ow of the castle, which is believed to be the oldest castle in County Cork, and the only round tower cas- tle in this part of Ireland. Ted gave us a rundown on the history of the castle from its beginnings in the middle of the 13th

centu-

ry, referring to its strategic importance on the tidal Woomanagh. The castle’s

location allowing access upriver and out to sea made this a very impor- tant site in past times. Our walking group had now swelled to 26 in size, with some joining ‘en route’, and we were treated

to

some ‘fact or fiction’ tales from our surprise visiting guest, the legendary John Arnold from Bartlemy, who had travelled down to do his own research on Inchiquin and its sister

castle on the Wooman- agh, Castle Richard. John could easily have spent the day regaling us with his brilliant yarns, each one of which of course was reputed to be absolutely true! John, you made our day, go raibh maith agat! A big thank you also to Ted and Rosarii O’Brien for welcoming us to their lo- cal area of interest and for their sharing of their own local lore.

Nemo Rangers’ Barry O’Driscoll Speaking Ahead Of The AIB GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Club Championship Semi Final

The feats of Slaught- neil have

left Barry

O’Driscoll scratching his head. The Derry side have become a magnet

for

silverware in recent sea- sons, necklacing together a raft of county titles, and a back-to-back Ul- ster double. But for a red card to

midfielder Padraig Cas- sidy before

half-time

against Dr Croke’s a year ago, then they might well be heading into this AIB All-Ireland semi-final clash with Nemo Rang-

ers as reigning champi- ons too. The Cork side haven’t

been to Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day since 2008, losing to St Vincent’s, and last lifted the Andy Merrigan Cup in 2003. The Derry and Re-

bel outfits, separated by 450 km, will now lock horns at O’Moore Park (4.30pm) this Saturday. “Their club is ex-

tremely impressive and I was trying to find out a bit about them, but what can you say?” says O’Driscoll.

“A club that can go into both codes to this stage of the year two years in a row, you’re left scratching your head a bit. What are they doing compared to other clubs? “They’ll be a different

outfit for us to come up against again because of their style of

play, and

they must be extremely fit to be where they are, and they must have good football on top of it as well. So we won’t be tak- ing them for granted at all.

“You wonder if they

had their 15 against Crokes’ 15 who would have won (last Paddy’s Day),” he adds. “It’s just something else you think about, so we’ll be giving them their due respect because they deserve it.” Nemo have been wait- ing almost two months for this opportunity after beating Crokes in the Munster final on Novem- ber 26. It was a 16th

provincial

crown for the Leeside gi- ants, but they’re not hap- py to rest on their laurels. O’Driscoll admits he

has been waiting with baited breath. “It was my third Mun-

ster title,” he explains. “It was brilliant because it’s a newer team and it would have been a lot of lads winning Munster for the first time. “We would have been

written off because we were coming up against Crokes who were All-Ire- land champions, I think the main thing everyone was most pleased about as well was we were consistent

all the way through the game, which

was important to us. “I’m extremely excit-

ed and been waiting a long time since our last game,” he says of the Slaughtneil test. “I just really wanted

to come now and at least now we’re into the week before the game so it re- ally starts to gear up now. “You go back in Jan-

uary, do a full month of training, and then you hit February and you’re still waiting for the 24th

. Now

at least we can start zon- ing in on the game and start fine-tuning things,

so it’s great.” Nemo Rangers’ Barry O’Driscoll was speaking ahead of the AIB GAA All-Ireland Senior Foot- ball Club Championship Semi Final taking place at O’Moore Park where they take on Slaughtneil this Saturday, February 24th
