Cobh Ramblers get
their new SSE Airtrici- ty League First Division campaign underway with a trip away to Long- ford Town on Saturday night (KO 7.30 pm). The Rams, head into
the new season with hopes of claiming a cov- eted play-off position at
the end of the cam- paign. Having enjoyed
a promising 2017, where they finished runners-up behind First
Division
champions Waterford FC, Stephen Hender- son’s men will be hoping to make a positive start to 2018, when they go up against Neale Fenn’s Longford Town, at

City Calling Stadium, this weekend. Longford
took them up to fifth in the table and to the FAI Cup quarter finals. Like Cobh, they will have as- pirations of achieving a play-off spot – although this season’s race for pro- motion is set to be one of the hottest ever with Gal- way United, Finn Harps and Drogheda
United
joining Cobh, Longford, Cabinteely, UCD, Wex- ford,
Shelbourne and
Athlone Town in the First Division.
Speaking to the East
Cork Journal recent- ly, Cobh boss Stephen Henderson said; ‘‘it’s going to be very compet- itive and very exciting. It could go all the way down to the wire – every team in it will feel they have at least a chance of a play-off. I think there are five or six teams that have the resources to win the league. The (level of) budgets that we are up against is madness. So,

for us, I think if we were to make the play-offs this year, it would probably be the best achievement Cobh
has had, since
they came back into the league. It would be re- markable.’’ After this weekend’s
opening assignment, the east Cork side will turn their attention to Sat- urday 3rd
March, when
they play host to Gal- way United, for their first home league game
of the season, at St Col- man’s Park (KO 7.45 pm).
Meanwhile, Cork City and newly promoted Waterford FC meet
in
the Munster Derby at Turner’s Cross this Fri- day night (KO 7.45 pm). The Rebel Army won their opening league fix- ture 3-2, in a five-goal thriller against St Pat’s, last weekend. Waterford, meanwhile, also got off to a winning start, as
they secured a 2-1 win over Derry City at
RSC. The
First Division
champions are taken to make a significant im- pact in this year’s Pre- mier Division and they should provide City with a stern test, when the sides meet
tomorrow.
On the other hand, John Caulfield’s men look to have the strongest squad in the league and will be a tough side to crack.

Flashback photo Due to editorial vaca-
tion, we missed out on our weekly photo from the past last week. So this weeks photo from the archives is from the real- ly early days, with many local heroes in the pic- ture. See if you can spot a young Kieran Higgins,
Sean Lee (RIP), Tom Scanlon, Jim Geeleher and John McCann. And there’s a famous East Cork refereeing legend also
pictured....can an- yone spot Sean Barry?? Looks like they were still the original Corkbeg jer- seys, so we’re thinking it could be around 1973- 1974.
