The hugely successful Stadia & Arena 2013 event was held in the vibrant city that is Istanbul, as Katie McIntyre reports.

ever before has the European sport and live entertainment venue sector
been treated to such a comprehensive conference programme as was witnessed at this year’s Stadia & Arena event. Fifty industry-elite speakers covered a host of diverse ‘hot topics’, from sports venue design and build, to sustainability, legacy, successful operations, revenue-maximisation, and much, much more.
Hosted in the vibrant city that is Istanbul, in the new Űlker Sports Arena, Stadia & Arena 2013’s opening reception was held on 21 May. The 400+ high-level attendees from 35 countries (including not only a large number of European countries but also Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Japan, Chile, Brazil, Singapore, Australia, USA and Nigeria) were given the opportunity to network with their peers and the 50 industry-leading exhibitors and sponsors. Attendees were also treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Arena, which involved many of the organisations that had been involved in bringing the venue from concept to
reality, including the operator, AEG, the designers, DDG and Sink Combs Dethlefs, as well as Connor Sports Flooring, ISS 24/7 and Urosan.
Day Two began with the welcome speeches from AEG’s General Manager at Űlker Sports Arena, Shane Chalmers, ESSMA’s Managing Director, Dimitri Huygen, Fenerbache SK’s General Secretary, Talat Yilmaz, and Stadia & Arena Events’ Managing Director, Alan Levett. This was followed by a standing- room-only Keynote Presentation by the
William (BC) Johnson from Disney Institute
Disney Institute’s William C. Johnson, during which Disney’s philosophy towards service and its applicability to facility managers was adeptly illustrated.
After the coffee and networking break sponsored by Erben, Ebru Köksal, Advisor to the President of Galatasaray SK, illustrated how a Turkish Superleague could help the country’s soccer clubs end an over-reliance on TV rights money.
Following the lunch and networking break, sponsored by 360 Architecture, attendees had a choice of break-out sessions. The Stadia Design, Build & Operations track featured a session on ‘Sports Venue Architecture’, with panellists John Barrow, Senior Principal, Populous; Don Dethlefs, CEO, Sink Combs Dethlefs; Chris Lamberth, Sports Development, 360 Architecture; Paul Hyett, Principal, HKS, Inc.; Duncan Phillips, Principal/Senior Consultant, RWDI; Andy Simons, Director, KSS; and Ron Turner, Principal, Gensler.
