PANSTADIA & ARENA MANAGEMENT AUTUMN 2013 Heart of happening

Mark Collins, Managing Director of Singapore Sports Hub, tells PanStadia & Arena Management that his sole focus is to drive day-to-day operations of the soon-to-be Singapore Sports Hub.

The Singapore Sports Hub site integrates a number of sport and entertainment venues in an accessible manner.

What kind of events will the Hub put on?

The Sports Hub is a fully integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle ecosystem built for communities to come watch, play and support world-class sports and entertainment events. Due to how the Sports Hub was designed, it will be able to host a wide range of events in terms of size and scale – from locally Singapore-run community events to premier top-tier international ones.

Is there anything lined up yet?

The Sports Hub has already been successful in attracting several world- class events, such as the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Championships 2014-2018 – the most prestigious event on the WTA calendar. This is the crown- jewel in the Women’s season where it will bring the best female players in the world to Singapore for families and communities to come and enjoy.

In July, it was also announced that we had successfully bid for and won the

right to host the World Junior Swimming Championships in 2015. This was thanks to Singapore’s National Swimming Association’s determination in tandem with the Sports Hub’s ambition to hold events of this magnitude. From women’s tennis to youth swimming championships – it is occasions like these that lure big crowds and inspire future sporting generations to come.

For regional events, we will also be hosting the Southeast Asian Games in 2015 and Suzuki Cup, in which where the Singapore national football team will go head-to-head with the rest of Southeast Asia, plus other regional championships that include sports like netball, rugby and athletics.

The Sports Hub will bring many new and exciting opportunities to Asia, and we promise not to disappoint by introducing events that Singapore has never before witnessed.

How does the Hub integrate with the rest of the city?

The Sports Hub was designed to environmentally and aesthetically integrate into its surrounding habitat next to the Kallang Basin and in support of the burgeoning Marina landscape. A key driver on this project is to make it easily accessible for the public to enjoy. Thus, this national landmark will be well-connected via the local public transport network and, most importantly, convenient for pedestrians to access from connecting pathways.

Adjacent national landmarks that sit in the same neighbourhood are Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, which makes Singapore one of Asia’s top destinations for leisure, entertainment and sports.
