When it comes to environmental impact, the build team says that a calculation has been made for each product, material or method of construction, from its genesis to recycling. The most obvious difference from most stadiums is the three-dimensional wooden structure which means a reduction in carbon emissions (3,000 tonnes of emission of CO2
) compared to using alternatives.
Natural ventilation will regulate the air temperature using the winds of the plain of the Var. Geothermal and recovery of heat contained in the soil is also being used. A photovoltaic plant will produce more energy than the stadium will consume.
EDF ENR is designing, installing and maintaining the photovoltaic plant of nearly 7,000 m² of solar panels integrated into the roof’s waterproofi ng membrane using EDF ENR’s AlkorSolar solution. This solar project contributes to Nice’s overall renewable energy plan. The Allianz Riviera will generate 1,500 MW per year at maximum.
Recovered rainwater will offer self-suffi ciency in irrigating the pitch and the surrounding park. Underground parking reduces the need for tarmac. Numerous car parks along the Plaine du Var, and the implementation of shuttle buses gives priority to public transport to access the stadium.
Waste will be sorted and recovered with recovery targets of: 40% of inert construction waste; 60% of special industrial (hazardous) waste; 100% of earthworks waste.
Photovoltaics will take full advantage of the stadium’s sunny location. PROJECT TEAM

Eco-centric
“The location of the stadium in the plain of the Var, a region of national importance, an Eco-Valley, means that the Allianz Riviera must be exemplary in its sustainability as well as allowing us to achieve strong economic and social ambitions,” explains Estrosi.
The eco element of the stadium has four main pillars: innovative technologies at the service of eco-performance, a policy of green procurement, the careful use of natural resources, and accessibility for spectators.
