Welcome V

enues with ambition have more opportunities than ever to host large-scale events. Fox Sports – according to media reports – is sounding out cities

about a global soccer competition in the European close season. This would lead to cities bidding to become hosts, much as for Euro 2020 or for an IAAF World Athletics Championships (Luzhniki Stadium Moscow 2013) or FINA World Championships (Palau Sant Jordi Barcelona 2013).

Sports authorities are always looking for global marketing opportunities and venues that are ready to host sports at a high level, including non-traditional sports, can win business. Major League Baseball is opening its 2014 season at the refurbished Sydney Cricket Ground. Singapore Sports Hub has bid and won the rights to host the Women’s Tennis Association Championships – see our article in Facility Watch.

It was great meeting so many readers of our new super-title PanStadia & Arena Management at the Stadia & Arena conference in Istanbul. The tour of Ulker Arena was an eye opener. I go around a lot of venues but every year the planning, design and imagination that goes into these buildings ratchets up a few more notches.

We are planning the 2014 editions of the magazine and I’d welcome your suggestions for article ideas. What issues do you anticipate will challenge your business in 2014 and beyond? Are you working on a great new venue project which is opening in 2014 and you’d like us to publish a venue profi le? My email is below and I look forward to hearing from you.

We hope you enjoy this Autumn issue and invite you to check out our Winter edition – our Showcase Special – in December.
