he UK Venue Managers Association (UKVMA) provides a platform


for members to share information, management styles, real time experiences and best practice whilst gaining access to other members, networking opportunities and suppliers. Members are primarily multipurpose venue and facility managers from the sports and entertainment sector. With over 30 years of experience in these sectors themselves, Michael Cunnah and Noel Jeffs, from Stadium Management Sstems, are both on the board of the UKVMA.


Membership not only includes free entry to the four meetings held each year across the UK, in different member venues, but also member rates on all UKVMA partnerships, including educational courses, complimentary quarterly PanStadia and Arena Management Magazine posted and full access to the membership section of the UKVMA website.


The UKVMA held its latest meeting in the prestigious Green Room at The 02 Arena London. Over 40 invited delegates enjoyed a full day of discussion and networking including talks from the Director of Venues 2012, Sport Ground Safety Authority and Fire Protection Association. Talks and debates were also held on venue licencing, sustainability and wi-fi . The day fi nished with a tour of the O2.

Energy saving advice


At the latest meeting at The 02 Arena, energy saving experts Carbon 2018 demonstrated how energy management is more important today than ever before. “With legislation in the driving seat, the increased cost of supply, diminishing resources and EU/UK emissions targets, energy management is becoming and will remain a topic that must be addressed and indeed this very subject is now appearing on boardroom agendas in many organisations,” says Kirsty Knight, Senior Account Manager at Carbon 2018.


Securing a competitive gas and electricity contract is vital as a cost reduction exercise. However to really drive down the associated costs of energy, facilities must look to reduce usage. Knight advises: “To coin a phrase, you need to understand the WWW of energy (not World Wide Web but What, Where, When!) – what is being used, where it is being used and when.”


A best practice strategy that allows for the gathering and analysis of data, through a comprehensive AMR (automatic meter reading) system, is key to success. This, alongside a targeting and monitoring (M&T) programme, will greatly assist in ensuring that any wasted energy is identifi ed and a programme which delivers changes to operations and attitudes is put in place to ensure that savings can be achieved. Knight says that a 20% savings in usage is typical when an M&T programme is in place. 
