floodlighting for broadcast

Millennium Stadium’s upgraded fl oodlighting has brought international televised events to the venue.

The Musco fl oodlighting upgrade at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium as

increased Lux levels by nearly 50%.

W

hen the leaders at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales,

determined it was time to replace the facility’s existing fl oodlighting system to better meet the needs of broadcasters and sports bodies, they knew it was a signifi cant decision. The 2012 London Summer Games were on the horizon, and the world would be watching. Millennium Stadium offi cials needed a lighting system that could meet present and future light levels in an effi cient manner. And, above all, they needed the kind of warranty and long-term partnership that would give them peace of mind, knowing that if any problems arose they would have all the immediate support and assistance they needed.

After lengthy research and a comprehensive search, it became clear that the best solution that would meet the needs and provide all the requirements Millennium Stadium was looking for was Musco’s Green Generation Lighting system. The system is custom designed and factory assembled, aimed, and

tested, with engineered refl ectors designed to cut glare by 50%. The new fl oodlighting system was precisely what the stadium needed to enhance the experience of rugby and football players, broadcasters, and the 72,500 spectators. The end result increased Lux per kW by nearly 50%, improving light levels and meeting recommended standards for international televised broadcast.

“From the time of selection and negotiation we had the feeling that we were being looked after at every step. The product we’ve received is fi rst class and will serve our needs and the needs of our broadcasters for many years to come,” says Darren Crossman, Facilities Manager, Millennium Stadium.

The Musco team worked with McSherry Electrical Limited to meet the project’s tight installation deadline for the upcoming London Games. “We wanted a turnkey solution with offsite manufacturing for modular installation, all preset to the correct aiming angles

for ease,” notes Crossman. In all, from the time the order was placed to completion of the project, it took no more than 10 weeks.

The completion of installation did not signal the end of the project, but instead the beginning of a partnership that would last a decade. The innovative Green Generation Lighting technology provides guaranteed Constant Light over the life of the lamps, and the Constant 10 product assurance and warranty programme covers parts and labour for 10 years.

“We have effectively entered into a partnership rather than a traditional purchase,” says Crossman.

The upgrade of the fl oodlighting has provided international broadcast light levels for several high profi le events to Millennium Stadium, including the upcoming Opening Ceremony for Rugby League World Cup 2013 and multiple international matches. Stadium offi cials continue to build on their success and bring world class events to the United Kingdom. 
