Arena Grêmio. The roof is LEXAN THERMOCLEAR multi-wall sheet custom-coloured 10-mm polycarbonate. It was delivered to contractor OAS from SABIC’s facility in Campinas, which also provided technical support and colour-matching services.

ArenA Amsterdam’s Project Manager Operations & Training Matthijs Wiersma is certain that the new stadium designs will attract the Brazilian football public long-term: “In terms of spectator comfort the new stadium designs are offering better facilities, both in the VIP areas and for the general public. Many more toilets and catering outlets are available, and these prove to be of a higher standard than in the old stadiums. The passion of the Brazilians for football will also guarantee a long-term interest in coming to stadiums, whilst the arrival of great players such as Gilberto Silva, Fred, Seedorf, Juninho and Ze Roberto also supports the quality of the league. As the stadiums are offering fi rst-class facilities for business events as well, the non-football public will start frequenting the venues more often. This is also necessary for the fi nancial sustainability of the stadiums.”

Wiersma is equally positive about Brazilian colleagues’ open minded approach to new ideas on the table:

The willingness to adapt new concepts such as high service levels, the inclusion of a stewarding system, making grass management a profession and working with technically advanced systems has been enormous. In all the projects we have been involved in we have seen that our Brazilian colleagues have fi rst experienced the state of the art operations in Amsterdam, after which we have jointly ‘tropicalised’ the various concepts and work methods for the local venues.
