PANSTADIA & ARENA MANAGEMENT AUTUMN 2013 Liaoning Maritime Sports School hockey pitches.

Racing for gold

At the National Games in China athletes are competing for gold on Polytan|STI surfaces.

I

n the Chinese province of Liaoning, preparations for the National Games have been in full swing. Held from 31 August to 12 September, the athletes compete in a total of 350 events across 31 disciplines at what is the biggest national sporting occasion in China. Polytan|STI and its longstanding partner company, C. Melchers GmbH & Co, began work back in May on two sports facilities in the port city of Dalian that will be used for the National Games.

Dalian relies on Polytan|STI

At the Liaoning Maritime Sports School the Polytan|STI team installed two MegaTurf Cool Plus hockey pitches, one of which is certifi ed to FIH Global standards – a fi rst for Polytan|STI in China. The facility has also been extended by two Poligras hockey pitches by Polytan|STI. The FIH Global-certifi ed pitch will be used for a variety of events, while the other fi elds will be employed for training. The hockey pitches were already been inaugurated at the beginning of June by a number of international teams who ran their training camps there.

...the circular track in the main stadium is IAAF Class I-certifi ed.

When it comes to running tracks, those in charge have also opted for Polytan|STI: at the Dalian Sports Centre they have installed a circular track in the main stadium, a warm-up track and two indoor areas – nearly 30,000m2

of the Polytan M system in total. What’s more, the

circular track in the main stadium is IAAF Class I-certifi ed. This is where the fi nishing line for the marathon at this year’s National Games will be located.

The sports facilities have already been used by the national teams from Australia, South Africa and Japan. Even after the National Games have come to an end, the new installations will continue to be in regular use: while the hockey pitches will be used primarily by national and international hockey teams for training purposes, the Dalian Sports Centre is scheduled to host sporting occasions, competitions and events.

Finishing straight with hurdles

The installation of both projects had to be completed in just 40 days – a real challenge, given that the weather conditions were far from ideal. The heavy rainfalls and cool temperatures at the start and the heat waves towards the end of the project meant that the individual steps had to be coordinated as much as possible with the weather forecasts.

The main stadium at the Dalian Sports Centre is hosting the Chinese National Games 2013.

94 PLAY SPORTS SURFACES

Another challenge faced by the project management team was the logistics: the two projects were installed simultaneously, but the two facilities are some 50 km apart. The enormous commitment of the Polytan team and the local installation team, however, enabled all hurdles to be overcome and deadlines kept.

With outstanding references and the benefi t of experience gained during the entire project phase, Polytan/Polytan|STI and their local teams have once again proved to be reliable partners for the best sports facilities in China. 
