The company was set up by Maurice Markovitz, a Polish refugee from the First World War, who started out selling war surplus from the back of a horse and cart.
On March 1st 1935 he bought the present Com- mercial Road premises, from Tideswell and Millers Dale Coal and General Merchants Company Ltd for £1200, ena- bling him to branch out into supplying building materials. His nephew Brian joined him in 1953 further develop- ing the business, and since then, Brian’s two sons David and Robert have taken over
