If there’s one KPI in this entire survey which ought to get people scratching their heads, it generated by each member of staff. Not that there will be much head-scratching going on at MP Moran, Huws Gray, Grant & Stone, HPS and the other companies at the top of the table – but those lower down might be asking themselves just what needs to be done to achieve a more competitive level of productivity.

An odd table, this, since it is topped and tailed by two of the big four, both with what seem to be aberrant numbers. As both of them are subsidiaries of much larger businesses, and we aren’t privy to the detail of their accounting practices, we can’t be But here’s another thing you might want to share with your bank – or indeed with anyone interested in funding your business. The average ROC achieved across all the merchants listed except the big four was 25.2%. Two years ago in our 2015 survey, it was 17.4%. Two years before that in 2013 it was 13.2%. So in the space of half a decade, average ROC in the merchant industry has doubled.
Message to investors: this is a very good place for your money!

as a measure of the overall competitiveness of each company listed in Trailblazers, based on what we consider to be the three most important ratios: sales growth, stockturn, and operating margin.
This year four companies top the magic 1,000 mark, and the average index score across all the companies listed is 337. Five years ago in 2012, only one company managed to score more than 800 – and the average across them all was 162. Enough said!
