The BMF meets MPs about apprentices twice
The BMF wer e in Parliament twice last month to meet MPs and Peers at the invitation of the All-Party Parliamentary Gr oup on Apprenticeships.
The first was a parliamentary r eception at which the BMF talked to Neil Carmichael MP

message focussed on parity of esteem between academic and vocational training - and persuading par ents that
university is not always the right choice for their childr en.
The second was to launch
an Appr entices’ Toolkit for MPs to hold job fairs and careers evenings in their constituency. Bad or non-existent car eers advice that fails to encourage school and college leavers to take up manual trades we desperately need was a common theme. The BMF believes that the month’’s

right direction but that more needs to be done to future- proof the building industry. John Newcomb, MD of
the BMF said: “The building industry and its supply chain are experiencing huge skills shortages. Construction firms face real difficulty attracting new faces. Our industry is not seen by young people as a long-term career option - especially by young women.
“If the Chancellor’s
announcement about ‘T’ levels helps redress the parity of
esteem between academic and vocational training, then that is good news. Merchanting provides fantastic career opportunities for young people, and the BMF is keen to persuade parents that university is not always the right choice for their children.”
