Franchise Focus All in a day’s work

A Minster Cleaning Services franchise can provide an exciting and rewarding business opportunity, says managing director Mike Parker

INVESTMENT LEVEL: £28,225

director, Mike Parker. Regular branch visits form an important part of his schedule. His recent trip to Edinburgh was to see that all was running smoothly for the new husband-and-wife team who purchased the franchise as a going concern in September and have recently moved to new premises.

W

Minster has been a full member of the British Franchise Association (bfa) since 1992 and, as one of the country’s most successful commercial cleaning franchises, is involved in many aspects of the franchising world. Mike recently took part in an HSBC event where he was part of a panel of industry experts that included a solicitor, an accountant and a franchise consultant brought together to advise companies that were thinking of franchising their businesses.

On days spent in the offi ce, Mike makes himself available to speak to franchisees whenever possible and meets up with members of the head offi ce team to relay information from the franchise network and to discuss current activity and plans for the year ahead. This can cover anything from marketing, operations and fi nance to getting to grips with the requirements of the new General Data Protection Regulation, which will replace the existing Data Protection Act in 2018. Mike also makes the fi rst call to

prospective franchisees to assess their suitability for the management franchise and is currently working on a resale. By using known bfa-accredited professionals, the buying and selling processes are simplifi ed, while both parties can be satisfi ed that they are receiving the very best possible advice. The majority of Minster’s most

recent franchisees have joined through the purchase of an established branch. This has many advantages, including cashfl ow, customers and staff from day one. Minster franchisees get all the help they need for the transition from employment to self-employment and then support in all main business areas,

including IT, marketing, fi nance, operations, training, employment law, health and safety, and environmental legislation. Minster has been providing offi ce and commercial cleaning services since 1982 and, in the nine years since Mike joined after a 30-year management career with HSBC, annual turnover has grown from £27million to £37million, taking the average branch turnover to over £850,000. It is the UK’s largest commercial cleaning franchise. Prospective franchisees can look

forward to a safe and secure future, whether they buy a branch resale or choose a new area, and all can build substantial, valuable businesses. The commercial cleaning market is massive; it is an essential business service, which appeals to a broad client base and, together with the size of Minster’s territories, off ers almost unlimited growth potential for franchisees. The Minster business model, in the hands of dynamic, self-motivated people-managers, has worked well for over 30 years and many branches turn over in excess of £1million. On average, franchisees have been with Minster for 13 years and some longer- serving franchisees are planning to retire

in the next few years. There are currently established franchises available for resale in Derbyshire, Dundee and Liverpool at a fee of £10,000 plus vat in addition to the purchase price of the business. New franchise opportunities include Cambridge, Doncaster, Durham, Leicester, London, Middlesex, Guildford, Peterborough and Swansea. Initial start- up cost is £28,225 plus vat, which covers licence, training, computer hardware, stationery, machinery, equipment and materials. In addition, between £40,000 and £60,000 working capital will be needed – fi nance is available from leading banks subject to status.
