Beginning again T

he beginning of a New Year is one of the best times to start a new career. Dubbed the ‘fresh- start eff ect’, tying a career goal to a temporal landmark makes

one much more likely to succeed. Many people dream of starting their own business and becoming their own boss, but have yet to take the plunge. Changing career can be a daunting prospect, particularly starting out on your own and taking the leap from the relative comfort of being an employee – with its regular working hours and fi nancial stability – into the unknown. Franchising can off er an attractive alternative, bridging the gap between employment and running your own business, but with the added reassurance that you are working for a well-known organisation with a proven business model. Franchising is growing in popularity. Its appeal to ambitious and entrepreneurial individuals is undeniable and the sector is thriving. One franchise business that is certainly benefi ting from this growth is the Subway brand, one of the largest and best-known franchise brands, with over 2,300 stores in the UK and Ireland and more than 44,000 stores in over 110 countries. Its successful franchise model has enabled thousands of individuals to fulfi l their dreams of becoming their own boss.

“Subway’s brand image is strong and has a high awareness amongst consumers”

Starting your own business requires commitment and motivation. Successful Subway franchisees are self-motivated, organised and hard-working. Passionate about the brand, they are willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved in all areas of the business, from front-of-house to purchasing and from local store marketing to HR and recruitment. They are also eff ective communicators, able to inspire their teams. Many of these are transferable skills that you may have gained in your

previous roles and can now bring to your own Subway franchise. Franchisees receive all the support and training needed to get their new business ventures up and running. Regional development agents provide support and assistance with site selection, leasing, operations and store development. Every new franchisee must also undergo a comprehensive two-week training course at the UK and Ireland’s Subway training centre in Cambridge. There are also regular opportunities to meet with development agents and fellow franchisees and share best practice.

Mohammed Jassat made the move

from employee to Subway franchisee, attracted by the chance to run his own business. Before opening a Subway store in Manchester, Mohammed was a marketing manager for an online women’s clothing store.

Mohammed explains: “I was drawn to the Subway franchise as its brand image is so strong and it has such a high awareness amongst consumers. For the fi rst couple of weeks we had our fi eld consultant with us every day helping with everything from ordering to operations, we learnt so much in that time, it truly was invaluable.” Another franchisee that made the leap is Luke Kendall, who runs two stores with his mum and brother. Having previously

worked for the Ambulance Service, the decision to start his own business was a bold move. Luke explains: “One of the reasons that we decided on a Subway franchise was the level of support it off ered, which was very reassuring as we’d never worked in the industry before. “The Subway brand supported us from day one with everything from the shop fi t- out plans to sales growth. If we ever had a question or a problem, our fi eld consultant was on the other end of the phone to help and if they couldn’t, then they’d fi nd someone that could. You always have support there when you need it with the Subway brand – it’s like a big family.” With over 2,300 locations already open in the UK and Ireland and further growth plans, the Subway brand is always on the lookout for hard-working, entrepreneurial individuals who want to fulfi l their dream of becoming their own boss.
