Join the club D
o you remember the brownies? Were you a cub or a scout – or sea cadet even? Perhaps you’re among that
hallowed membership – the Blue Peter badge winner, one that comes with, or so I’ve heard, lifelong privileges. In any case, you have probably, at some point, belonged to some sort of club or association and enjoyed the companionship, teamwork and camaraderie it involves.
When it comes to our working lives, many of us crave both autonomy – the facility to be in control of our working day, making our own decisions and maintaining a large degree of independence – and the support and input of others. Franchising is one way of achieving this desired self- determination while enjoying the benefi ts of an established system, brand reputation and a network of fellow franchisees. Furthermore the tried-and-tested nature of a franchisor’s business model means it provides support in the early days, plus the attendant teething problems of a startup were once experienced by the franchisor and so they have ironed them out or are well versed in dealing with them. Much
like clubs that you’ve joined in the past, when you sign up and follow the rules, a franchise network is fully there for you. If you want to fi nd out more, particularly
about real-life franchisee success stories, turn to page 33 for the guide to the British & International Franchise Exhibition where you’ll fi nd all the information you need about the forthcoming event at London Olympia on 20 and 21 January. More on teamwork and support is found in our feature on why ex-servicemen and women make great franchisees (pages 24-27) and an article on page 30 on the strengths and advantages found in franchising over and above running an independent business.
Whatever business or sector you’re
researching, you will fi nd within in these pages, online at
businessfranchise.com or at any of the National Franchise Exhibitions, what it is you’re looking for... and speaking as a former brownie, on that I give you my guide’s honour!
