nfection control has become a hot topic in hospitals and care homes throughout the UK. Much media attention has been given to various outbreaks of Norovirus – often called the winter vomiting bug – in addition to the superbug MRSA and also the airborne spread of the pathogen C.Diffi cile, which has some particularly nasty side eff ects. For vulnerable patients, however, fi ghting these infections can prove fatal. The current healthcare system faces the challenges of infection control on a daily basis. Ward overcrowding and patients occupying corridors has become commonplace and this can be a contributing factor to
the spread of disease. In an age of austerity, it seems these issues are only set to continue. Outsourcing services such as decontamination is one way to cope with a growing number of patients and, as a result, the healthcare decontamination sector has seen rapid expansion in recent years. It also allows nursing staff to focus on their primary role of patient care.
