FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS

I WAS RECENTLY talking with a group of travel buyers about duty-of-care, and one recounted the story of a female traveller who booked off-policy and direct – and then phoned for help when she found herself checked into a brothel. This isn’t the first time we’ve had reports of a hapless traveller

staying in a fleapit of ill-repute on the wrong side of the tracks. Another day, another headache for travel buyers. If your travel

programme is running smoothly, you can bet there’s a new challenge just round the corner. For some, next up is the EU referendum (see p46), but I’m taking apocalyptic predictions with a pinch of salt. As CTI boss Clive Wratten put it to me recently (more from Clive on p32): “Whatever the outcome is, we’ll deal with it, and encourage people to get out and keep travelling, whether that’s for exporting or building relationships, for the sake of their business.” This attitude is reflected in our annual 50 Leading TMCs guide (p61), which shows their sales are up, and two-thirds of them expect more than 5 per cent growth this year. For our sector, the referendum is just the latest in a series of

hurdles that can make the business travel journey a bumpy ride. Terror attacks, visa changes, geopolitics, new fare structures, hikes in taxes and fees, data privacy laws, sharing economy disruptors, strikes... You know the score. All these challenges are tackled with collaboration, innovation, education and communication – and to some extent they probably keep you, and therefore me, in a job! Talking of education, we have two great events coming up for travel buyers: our BBT Forum in London on May 19 explores topics including communication and managing disruption (see p123), followed by a one-day conference on hotel sourcing (p116), in partnership with HRS and ITM, on June 9. I look forward to seeing you there...
