by ALAN SHEEHAN Midleton Rugby Club

welcomed back a Ball- inacurra native at a cere- mony held this past Tues- day, 18 April. John West,

the es-

teemed international rugby referee, returned to Midleton to present a trophy to representatives of Midleton RFC in the Midleton Park Hotel. The trophy, which is sil- ver and Kilkenny mar- ble, was donated by Mr West and will be retained at

the Clubhouse as a perpetual trophy award-

ed to the Adult Player of the Year. “John’s father was pre- viously the headmaster in Midleton College,” said Anne Cunningham, Public Relations Officer for Midleton Rugby Football Club. “His fam- ily home was in Ballina- curra, so he has strong ties to Midleton. He is a famous international referee, kind of the Nigel Owens of his day. He is a good, lovely man and he was a great referee. He really stood his ground in contentious situations.” Continued on page 4
