Cobh Municipal District Launch Streetscape Painting & Signage Scheme 2017

by ALAN SHEEHAN

Continued from front page “It is an initiative by

Cork County Council,” said Cllr Barry, “to en- hance and upgrade towns and areas in need of a lick of paint, or locations where the signage isn’t particular- ly good, including heritage sign. It covers both resi- dential and commercial areas and is an incentive to help people in brightening up their towns.” Under the scheme ten-

ants or owners of build- ings can avail of a grant of up to 50% of the cost of painting the facades along the street, 50% of the costs of replacing existing plas- tic, neon & printed signs etc. with heritage-type signs, and 50% towards the cost of materials where it is proposed that the tenant/ owner will undertake the work themselves. Applications on a full

street

basis (10 or more adjacent buildings on one street) will be prioritised

over individual applica- tions, with a grant of 60% provided should a full street come together. Ap- plications received by 12 May will be given priority. To qualify for the paint- ing and signage grants, tenants/owners should make a formal application in writing to the applicable Municipal District Offices of Cork County Council providing the following in- formation:

a photograph

of the building’s present condition/current signage arrangement; two quota- tions from registered paint- ing contractors for the pro- posed painting works and/ or one quotation from the sign manufacturer; the proposed colour scheme; and details of the proposed new signage. Proposed signage should heritage-type

Killeagh GAA Club to Host Talk on Social Media and Cyberbullying

by ALAN SHEEHAN Killeagh GAA club will

host a guest speaker who will deliver a lecture on social media and cyber- bullying next Wednesday, 26 April. The

talk entitled

Healthy Social Media and Cyberbullying was organ- ised by Killeagh Healthy Clubs Committee

and

will be held at Pairc Ui Chinneide next Wednes- day with all welcome to attend. The talk is split into

two groups: the talk for teenagers aged 14-19 will take place from 6-7.20pm and the talk for parents and adults will commence from 8pm till

9.30pm.

The teenagers’ talk is free, but adults are asked for a €5 contribution towards costs. The guest speaker who

will deliver the talk is re- tired Garda John O’Dw- yer, who founded Let’s B Safe, an organisation dedicated to dealing with

problems of bullying, cy- ber bullying and online safety. “The talk will be giv-

en by John O’Dwyer,” Said Liz Sinclair, mem- ber of the Healthy Clubs Committee and Welfare Officer for the Killeagh GAA Clubs. “He is a former member of the Garda Síochána and he’s in charge of Let’s B Safe. I saw him talk in St Col- man’s Community Col- lege, Midleton and I asked him to come up and give this one. Not exclusive for members of the GAA. It is open to everybody in the community.” The subject of the talk

organised

by the Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project. “We had a talk a few

weeks ago by the Samar- itans,” said Ms Sinclair. “That was also split into two workshops; one for 12-16 year olds and the other for 16-30. We hand-

ed out sheets to everybody asking what other topics for speakers they would be interested in and this was one of the top ones. Other ones like nutrition were also very high so we are working on those too.” The

Killeagh

Healthy Clubs Pro- ject is run by the lo- cal GAA but aims to provide services to the community at large. “The Healthy Clubs is an initiative run by the GAA,” said Ms Sinclair. “The GAA pitch in Killeagh is a non-smoking one, we got for hill and beach walks once a month and we have healthy food camps running constantly. We believe that a healthy body means a healthy mind which means a healthy community but we run craft workshops in the clubhouse every Mon- day as a community gathering. People can

come along and do crafts or just come for tea and coffee and a chat. We are
