Cobh Tidy Towns Association Seeking Volunteers for Main Spring Clean this Saturday in Participation with An Taisce
by ALAN SHEEHAN
Cobh Tidy Towns Association will hold its main Spring Clean this Saturday, 22 April as part of its participation in An Taisce National Spring Clean month. Members of Cobh
Tidy Towns Association and local volunteers will gather at the playground at
Five Foot Way at 10am to pick litter and clean the area as best they can. “We have been out
every weekend as always but we have designat- ed this Saturday for the big Spring Clean,” said Ruth Ring, Chairperson of Cobh Tidy Towns Association. “Whoever is free or has an hour to spare can come along
and give us a hand or even just clean their own area. We have pickers, gloves and bags availa- ble and the more people we have the less there is to do. We hope to make a good job of it on the day.” April is An Taisce
National Spring Clean month, an initiative which encourages peo- ple to do their part in cleaning or keeping clean their town or vil- lage.
Participants can
organise a clean-up for their local area during this month by registering online, after which they would receive free clean- up kit and advice from An Taisce. “One of the estates in Cobh, Rushbrooke Manor, organised a
Spring Clean for the same Saturday,” said Ms Ring. “Another estate, Cluain Ard, did their own clean two weeks ago and they had loads of people out for that. Cork County
Council
arranged to do rubbish collections for the estates who organised their own Spring Cleans. Helping out even for a day can make a huge difference where you live. If any- one wants to get in touch with us then we will help out in whatever way we can.”
Cobh Tidy Towns Associations previously won gold medals at the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2015 and 2016, also winning silvers in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and receiving a
bronze in 2011. “There
are lots of
people who express in- terest in helping us,” said Ms Ring, “but who say they can’t come every Saturday. But if they keep their own stretch of road of the approach roads where
they live
clean then that makes a huge difference. We rely heavily on volunteers and anyone who plays a part makes a huge dif- ference. This month is all about getting more people have
involved. We two gold medals
and we want to keep them coming. The only way we can do that is if the whole town gets in- volved.” Cobh Tidy Towns can
