Cobh Lions Club Holds Annual Table Quiz Next Thursday In Aid Of The Lourdes Group
by ALAN SHEEHAN
Cobh Lions Club will hold its Annual Ta- ble Quiz next week on Thursday, 27 April in aid of the Lourdes Group. The
on the night. We always welcome new faces.” The table quiz features
Annual Table
Quiz will be hosted by Rushbrooke Tennis Club and begins at 8pm sharp. A table of four costs €40 with all proceeds going towards the
Group in Cobh. “It
starts at
Lourdes 8pm
sharp,” said Orla Fla- ven of Cobh Lions club. “It is €40 for a table of four, but we try to keep the tables to four people if possible so it works out at €10 a head. Our emcee is Lions member Anna Hamilton. People don’t need to pre-book. They can just show up
prizes for the winning teams which will gener- ally be split between the four members, as well as a raffle and spot priz- es. The winning prizes will have to be earned; smartphone
use dur-
ing the quiz is frowned upon. “There are no phones
allowed during the quiz,” said Ms Flaven. “We want to keep it old school. Table quizzes are kind of dying off across the board because it is so easy to use a smartphone to cheat. We would go around and ask people before the quiz not to use phones and to engage their brains instead.” Cobh Lions Club has
served the communi-
ty for 21 years and its Annual Table Quiz has raised money for the Lourdes Project for near- ly 20 of those years. “We
Lourdes
support Project
the every
year through this table quiz,” said Ms Flaven. “They are a group in Cobh who do great work with sending peo- ple over to Lourdes, like people who are sick or who need help. We try to raise money and help them send two people over.”
Cobh Lions Club,
which won Lions Club of the Year in 2014, are part of the Lions Club International which has served Ireland for 100 years. Lions Club Inter- national is largest chari-
table organisation in the world with 1.4 million members and one that raises millions each year for worthy causes inter- nationally and for local communities. Cobh Li- ons Club have previously raised for causes such as Cobh Hospital, the An- nual Food Appeal, Coal fund collections, sending people to Lourdes, and much more. “We are always look-
ing for new members,” said Ms Flaven. “Any- one interested in joining can contact us by email at cobhlions@gmail. com or we meet up the first Thursday of every month from September to May at the Great Is- land Community Centre in Cobh.”
An Invitation to Celebrate 20 Great Years with Cumann na Daoine in Youghal
by DENISE FITZGERALD
Continued from front page We would also be de-
lighted to see anyone from the Youghal and surround- ing areas who may be curious or interested in volunteering on the many varied committees, and our celebrations on Sat- urday will give them the opportunity to learn and hear more about Cumann na Daoine. Biddy Phelan is a found- er member and said
“I
remember 20 years ago when it all happened. There was a group of us, about 8 ladies, who were involved in a Creche, and one morning Maria Power called in and asked us if we would be interested in starting up a Communi- ty Development project”. Biddy went on to say “Pol- icies, Articles, Procedures, Finance and Skills were all mentioned, and I remem- ber thinking to myself that I just wouldn’t be able for
it!” Twenty years later Bid- dy is still an integral and crucial part of a very ac- tive and innovative team. So why not pop in on
Saturday next and meet them all. Refreshments will be provided and you will be made very wel- come.
