AIDAN

“MAHAFFY” McCARTHY RETIRES FROM CLUB RUGBY Our 2016/2017 Ulster Bank League

. It wasn’t only the last behind campaign

came to an end in Kanturk RFC on Saturday, April 15th

league game of the season but also the end of an era. The great Aidan McCar- thy (Mahaffy) retired from club rugby after 19 years competing in The All-Ire- land League. Aidan is

the

last link to that great team who conquered junior rug- by back in the late 1990s, gaining the club promotion to the AIL. He has been a massive ambassador for the club both on and off the pitch (although few oppo- sition teams would agree). People near and far admire his career longevity, indeed not too many, if anyone has played for so long in Do- mestic rugby. All 19 years, apart from 1 in which he spent with St. Mary’s RFC in Dublin, were with his home club Midleton. On the pitch, Aidan is as hard as nails, lives on the edge (a small bit) but off the field he is an absolute gentleman, which as most people say is the ideal rugby player. His discipline and fitness amaz- es most people but that is a

every great man is a great woman but in Aidan’s case there are 5. To Sarah and the girls thank you for all the Tuesday nights, Thursday nights and Saturdays you had to do without Aidan. His commitment to the club was huge but only possible because of your commit- ment and support of him – we are so very grateful. To Aidan from all in Mid-

leton RFC - players, coach- es, and committee members we wish you well and thank you for the many great days you gave us.

WORLD

CHAMPIONS COMING TO MIDLETON RFC! We

are very honoured

to welcome The Sunday’s Well Rebels to Towns Park on Sunday, April 23rd

when

they’ll take on Midleton Over 40s in a fundraising fixture. The Rebels are Ire- land’s only mixed ability rugby team and are also current Mixed Ability Rug- by World Champions. Mixed ability rugby is a full contact game played by teams made up of players with and without intellec- tual disabilities. The Rebels travel to Spain in August to defend their world title and we hope this fundraiser will give a boost to the funds they need to compete. We’ll

have a raffle on the day of the game with lots of priz- es on offer, tickets are €5. Please support this very spe- cial event which showcases all that is good in rugby and sport.

POLICY CHANGE FOR ORDERING TICKETS The IRFU now requires

that all Home Internation- al Rugby Tickets are paid for in full by the club ahead of the respective game. As you can appreciate this pe- riodically and unnecessarily compromises the club’s fi- nances. To alleviate this sit- uation, it has been agreed by

The Committee that people ordering tickets through Midleton RFC must pay for them in full no later than 2 calendar months

prior to

the game. Any tickets ordered and not paid for in full by this

date will be released for re- sale by the club without ex- ception. Current

will have

club members priority in any

situation where tickets are limited. Please
