Aghada 0-13 Dohneys 1-8
Aghada recorded a ter-
rific win in the preliminary round of the Cork senior football championship, played in Ovens last Satur- day evening. The East Cork side will now face UCC in the first round but this vic- tory keeps their senior sta- tus and that will be huge for East Cork’s sole represent-
ative at senior level. The delight after the game was obvious with Aidan Kelle- her and his Aghada team celebrating as if they had won the county. In contrast Dohneys were dejected as the prospect of relegation now rears its head even at this early stage of the sea- son.
the
Aghada began well with opening
four points
but were to go another 17 minutes without a score as Dohneys fought
back
in what was never a clas- sic with both sides making plenty of errors. With vet- eran Pearse O’Neill lead- ing the Aghada attack with aplomb, Mathew O’Con- nor and free-taker Cian Fleming also on song the East Cork side continued to keep their noses in front. JAFC Midleton v Fr. O’Neill’s
Fr. O’Neill’s 1-10 Midleton 1-07
Fr O’Neill’s just got the
better of Midleton in this well contested JAFC game played at
Maginers Hill
in Youghal last Thursday evening. O’Neill now pro- gress to a quarter final meet- ing with Lisgoold. Conditions were
ideal and both sides scored ear-
ly in a first half where the sides were level on three oc- casions. Fr O’Neill’s struck first with a Robert Cullinane point from play on the third minute, but Kieran Mulcahy responded almost instantly to level matters and just 60 seconds later Midleton had the lead through Johnny
Comer. Minutes later it was all
change again as we had the opening goal as O’Neill’s broke quickly with declan Dalton sending Billy Dunne clear. His shot rebounded off the crossbar but the alert Padraig Higgins punched to the net as O’Neill’s hit the front again. It was end to end stuff as back up the field came Midleton and a foul gave the ‘Magpies’ a penalty and for the second championship game in a row Declan Ryan was pin
their main threat, did level it at six points apiece, early in the second half. Aghada drove on again
with another four, three from the boot of Fleming and one from Leahy to keep in front. However, Dohneys were given a lifeline when Tim Hartnett was adjudged to have fouled Buckley and the Cork U21 player dust- ed himself down to shoot home
from the penalty
spot. He quickly added a levelling point and sudden- ly the game was back in the
point accurate with the kick to give Midleton the goal as the lead again changed hands.
Midleton then extended
their lead with three unan- swered points, until Daniel Harrington stopped the rot for O’Neill’s with a 25th
min-
ute point from play. O’Neill’s finished the half stronger adding on two more scores to leave the sides level at the break. In the
second half Fr
O’Neill’s just simply out- scored Midleton and domi- nated the ball for lengthy pe- riods and despite some very
melting pot going into the final ten minutes. Aghada remained com-
posed and with Pearse O’Neill using his aerial ability to field the high ball, it allowed Aghada to push on again and with Flem- ing converting a free, they got back in control with O’Neill fittingly having the final say to close out the contest with a superb final effort that gave Aghada a hard fought but fully de- served win, that delighted manager Aidan Kelleher. Aghada can now look for- ward to a first round tie with UCC and win or lose
poor wides, the men from Aghavoine still had plenty in hand. There were points from all directions and in the second half as O’Neill’s re- stricted Midleton to just two scores and a lot of that was down to excellent pressure in defence. Shane Harrington, Billy
Dunne, Ryan Kenneally, Mark O’Keefe and Sean O’Connor were all on tar- get
for O’Neill’s with the
two Midleton points com- ing from placed efforts from John Comer and Declan Ryan as Midleton bow out while Fr O’Neill’s continue
that contest, they will have another game as well so this victory was a really important one for the club, who are rebuilding for the future.

the start. The Rebels signalled
Tipperary 1-8 CORK’S full-forward
line impressed as the Rebels cruised to a 19-point victory over Tipperary in Wednes- day evening’s Electric Ire- land Munster minor football championship quarter-final. Mark Cronin, Damien
Gore and Cathail O’Ma- hony scored 3-13 between them as the Rebels marched on to next month’s semi-fi- nals, with Tipp left to face Clare or Waterford through
the back door in a play-off. Cronin scored 2-4, Gore
added 1-5 and O’Mahony collected four points, split between play and frees, as Cork won at a canter. Re- markably, just three points separated the counties in last year’s competition but Cork increased that margin by 16 tonight. At half-time, Cork were
comfortably ahead,
leading by 1-9 to 0-4, having played against the wind from
their intentions early, racing into a 0-2 to 0-0 lead before Tipp finally got off the mark in the tenth minute, Ryan Lambe kicking the first of his two points from play in the opening half. Lambe and Conall Ken-
nedy were the only Tipp players to score from play before half-time, as Shane Ryan added a free, but Cork purred along nicely. The gap was out to six points – 1-5 to 0-1 – when Cronin, younger brother of senior player Ste- phen, volleyed home to re- ward Damien Gore’s excel-
lent turn and attack on goal. Tipp did rally with two
points in a row – Ryan and Kennedy on target – but Cork hit back with three on the spin to keep plenty of distance between the sides. Lambe pointed for Tipp in the 29th
minute but that was
cancelled out by Jack Mc- Carthy in first half stoppage time, as the visitors took an eight-point lead with them down the tunnel. The floodgates opened
in the second half as Cork put their opponents to the sword emphatically. Cronin collected his second goal in the 37th
minute and, as Tipp Tel: 021 463 8000 • Email:
