Cork Short Mat Bowls Club

With the League and

Cup seasons drawing to a close and tournaments at an end we turn our atten- tion to our own events and

the “Dolly Horgan” Perpet- ual Cup is the main compe- tition on our bowls calen- dar. This is a very special year as we are celebrating

the 10th anniversary of this

event. Dolly was a much loved member of our club for many years and to hon- our her memory the Hor- gan family donated a mag- nificent cup which is played at this time of the season every year. Finbarr Hor- gan kindly made the draw

for both the Cup and Plate competition s last week and three 1st

round games in the

Cup took place. Once again this year Jer-

ry Wallis came on board to sponsor the prizes for both competitions and our club very much appreciate his kind donation. Joyce and

Kathleen set the tone for the big event with an extra end win over Barry and Fred. Vera and Liz put in a great performance to beat Patricia and Malcolm to reach Round 2. John and Tadgh played very good bowls as they moved onto the second round with an

exciting win over Ann and Mary. The next couple of

weeks promise some crack- ing games in both the Cup and Plate, “watch this space”. Our two teams fin- ish the leagues with home games against Mitchels- town and Lower Aghada

this week, our Club Cap- tain Peter O Reilly thanked everyone who played over the season in Cup, Leagues and Tournament Competi- tions and all club members who turned up to our club nights every Tuesday and Thursday nights since the 1st

September.

East Cork Division 2 And 3 Final Pairings Decided

by DARAGH Ó CONCHÚIR

CORK and Derry have

qualified to face off in the Littlewoods Ireland Camo- gie League Division 2 final, with Dublin and Roscom- mon making it through to the Division 3 decider, with both games scheduled for April 30. Derry last won the Divi-

sion 2 title in 2012 but they struggled at the highest level in both League and Championship. Now re-

turned to Division 2, they have shown clearly that they will be contenders for silverware all season. Karen Kielt ensured that

they would have an ear- ly shot at a return to the winner’s enclosure thanks to a hard-fought 1-11 to 0-11 victory over Kildare at the magnificent Inniskeen Grattans GAA grounds. Kildare started strongly

and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes but Derry drew level and it was nip and tuck from there to the

interval, when the sides went into the dressing rooms on 0-6 apiece. Melissa Lyons and Emer McGuigan exchanged points on two occasions early in the second half before Emer Reilly shot the Lilies ahead in the 39th minute. That lead was momen-

tary however as Derry worked the sliotar up the field from the puckout and Áine McAllister set up Mary Hegarty for a crucial goal.

eastcorkjournal Siobhán Hurley dis-

played her big-time calibre with two points to bring the teams level but Kielt proved the match winner, firing points from play either side of a close-in free to finally see off Kildare. Cork will provide the

opposition after providing a scoring exhibition in dis- pensing with Carlow by 0-18 to 1-7 at Carriganore. It says much for the Rebels that in clocking up such a tally, they had six individual scorers with all bar Finola

Neville being multiple scor- ers.

Rachel O’Shea was top

of the tree with six points but Katelyn Hickey (four) and Linda Collins (three) were significant contribu- tors too. Carlow were re- liant on Eleanor Treacy, who registered five points, though minor player Ra- chel Sawyer did help her- self to a brace and Michele Nolan plundered the goal. Dublin produced a consummate team perfor- mance as they accounted

for Clare by 1-12 to 0-6 at The Ragg, Caragh Daw- son and Laois Quinn shar- ing six points and Aoife Bulger added 1-1 for the Dubs. Clare could not re- ally threaten the Dublin defence though, with Nik- ki Kaiser’s two points their highest tally. On Saturday, Roscom-

mon got the better of Ker- ry in a very hard-fought encounter in Gort in which the defensive strategies certainly prevailed over whatever attacking plans were devised. Roscommon held sway marginally at the break by 0-4 to 0-2.

The second half was

even more difficult for for- wards but it was the Rossies that prevailed, getting the better of a side that had beaten them in the group by eight points the previous month. Minor star Shauna Fal-

lon made the difference, managing to score three points. In the context of the game, that was a consider- able and significant con- tribution and ensured that Roscommon have a chance to make amends for last year’s final loss to Armagh and achieve the long-await- ed for first League title.
