Glenthorn Celtic ‘B’ 4 Corkbeg 3 Corkbeg were beaten 4-3 by AULDiv2A title
rivals
Glenthorn Celtic ‘B’ at St Aidans School, Ballyvol- ane on Sunday morning. It was a deserved win for the home side, who looked hungrier on the morning and will now be considered favourites for promotion ahead of Corkbeg. Cork- beg will be disappointed with their performance as they never got their passing game going at all. The first half was fair-
ly eventful. Corkbeg went ahead within the opening 5 minutes, when Jordan Ryan sprung the Glenthorn off- side trap and fired past Pak- ie Cassidy in the Glenthorn goal for a 1-0 lead. But, the home side were passing the ball really well and levelled soon afterwards, when Ian Cotters inswinging free kick was headed into the bottom corner by Sean O Connor. And the home side went ahead after 15 min- utes, when Corkbeg gave possession away cheaply in their own half and man of the match Ian Cotter fired a missile from 25 yards into the top corner via a post for a 2-1 lead. Cotters deliv- ery from free kicks & cor- ners was a feature of the opening half, as time and time again, he put Cork- beg under severe pressure with testing balls. Corkbeg responded and Pakie Cas- sidy produced a stunning point blank stop from Ian
Corkbeg Reports against
following a
great delivery from Aidan Cotter. But on 25 minutes, it was 2-2. Cassidy need- lessly elbowed Alan Hor- gan into the head in the penalty area and a penalty was awarded to Corkbeg, though inexplicably no red card. Ian Casey converted from the spot and the game was finely poised at 2-2. Glenthorn remained on the front foot for the remainder of the first period, but it was Corkbeg who came closest
to leading at the
break as once again Cassi- dy produced at top drawer stop to keep out Dylan Ca- seys volley from 18 yards. Glenthorn kept the pres-
sure up in the second peri- od and although Corkbeg worked extremely hard, it was the home team who looked the
more likely
to score. Typically, it was Corkbeg who went ahead again. A Glenthorn attack broke
down and Dylan
Casey threaded a great ball through to Dylan O Neill, who lifted the ball over the advancing Cassi- dy for a 3-2 lead. But soon afterwards, this topsy-turvy game swung again. Once again, it was Cotters bril- liant delivery from the right and Neil Greaney headed into the top corner from 8 yards to restore parity at 3-3. There looked only one winner from here, as the home side drove forward at
every opportunity &
brought on all their subs to inject fresh legs into the at- tack. Corkbeg were trying to put out fires everywhere, with Ian Casey, Dean Keegan & Tommy Smyth all playing well. Ian Cot- ter fired another free kick
and we all expected a tough encounter. Straight
from the kick the Corkbeg post
and soon afterwards, the pressure finally told, when Glenthorn went
ahead.
Lively winger Shane Dug- gan skipped to the by-line and whipped a ball across goal to Jason Creamer and though his shot looked to be heading wide, the ball struck
Corkbeg’s Dean
Keegan and trundled over the line for what proved to be the winner with 15 min- utes left. The home side looked comfortable for the remainder of the game, with Jordan Ryans specu- lative shot from 25 yards that was comfortably saved by Cassidy being Corkbeg’s only meaningful attempt at goal. A deserved win for the Ballyvolane side, who were sharper & hungrier than Corkbeg on the day. Team: P. O Reilly, T.
Smyth, F. Wenham, D. Keegan, C. Horgan, I. Casey, A. Cotter, J. Ryan, A. Horgan, D. O Neill, D. Casey. Subs: F. Ahern for Wenham(60mins), M, Asyckyk for Cot- ter(75mins), J. Maguire for D. Casey(80mins).
U-13 Div4 - Corkbeg 4 Mayfield 0 Corkbeg jump from 5th
to top of the league after a hard fought win vs a strong Mayfield first team. The Beg U13s welcomed
high flying Mayfield to a sunny Whitegate on Mon- day evening. The pitch was immaculate
and testament to the a efforts
of Terry & Co since the weather has improved. The Beg kicked off in this high- ly anticipated game. Just 3 points separated the sides
huge
off, this was evident as the visitors put our lads under pressure. They attacked out wide and it was soon clear that Mayfield had a plan to play through their no.11 on the right wing. The Beg started the game with a slightly changed shape and line up and it took a little time to settle but credit to the boys, they soon came to grips with the Mayfield tactics. A positional change saw Aaron switch with Jake and it worked a treat with Jake having more freedom to use his ability and Aar- on wilfully stuck to keep- ing the no.11 in his sights at all times. A big ask but he was well upto the task. The `Beg gradually started to exert their own pressure while
the defence stood
strong with Tommi, Se- anie B and James clearing ball simply and intelligent- ly. With Mark anchoring midfield, he and Fionn, Olivier, Jake and Cian H got on top and the ball started to fizz about the place, with wave after wave of attack. One such attack led to a corner which was delivered right on the sweet spot for Olivier to knock it back across the 6 yard box where Fionn ghosted in to finish well. A deserved lead for the Beg. They kept up the tempo and snuffed out the various Mayfield forays with a calm assuredness and dogged determination. Cian in goal did his bit and was the model of concen- tration, even plucking an out swinging corner from Seanie
B’s head. Good
clearances followed, find- ing his men and instantly putting the visitor’s defence under pressure. Half time
arrived with the Beg fully in top with their solitary goal in the bag. The visitors restarted the game in unusual
fashion
by booting the ball direct- ly forward from the 1 man kick off and this was seen a few more times in the game. This tactic didn’t unsettle our lads and they kept driv- ing at them at every oppor- tunity. Fionn and Cian H were getting great rewards out wide and with Sean Hennessy taking over from an injured Jake just before half time, they found an- other willing running mate who tackled and harried himself to a standstill at times. With Olivier and Mark bossing the middle of the lush Beg pitch, the game entertained the large boisterous home crowd. Willing their players on, it took until the 18th
minute
of the second half for the second goal to come. The Beg were knocking on the door for quite a while and when Mark delivered an inch perfect free kick from his own half into the box, Fionn pounced to shoot goal ward. We will give it to him though the referee Mr. Forde, adjudicated it as an own goal for the unfortu- nate defender. The
boys now lifted
themselves up a gear and with Olivier departing for a well earned break, Jack “the terrier” Flynn took to the field. Instantly getting stuck in, he made sure the visitors knew him and was a constant threat with neat touches and simple lay off
passes to team mates.
No.3 arrived soon after when Cian O delivered a pinpoint long delivery that Jack Charlton would be proud of. The imperious Pete White took it down,
stepped his man and laid it off to the grateful Fionn who rifled the ball with a delightful curl from the edge of the box. It beat the keeper all ends up and nestled in the goal to set off scenes of delerious delight from the even more rau- cous home crowd. Pete’s super distribution and in- telligent runs all night gave the crowd a glimpse
of
what this lad can do and he was a constant threat and thorn in the visitors’ sides. Pete then departed ex-
hausted having tormented the visitors and with Fionn O’Call joining up front, on the left, in the middle.... we’re not quite sure where he was as he was every- where! A real live wire and he battered the
visitors
again and again with his te- nacity and simple passing. Our defence of Tommi O, Seanie B, James and Aar- on were just outstanding. Aaron will have to check the pocket in his shorts be- fore the next game as the big no.11 spent the whole game there and could quite possibly still be there. An excellent
defensive effort
was then added to when Tommy Fahy, our Aussie cousin and new found Beg starlet
setting up entered the game
giving James a break. He was solidity defined and played some lovely passes down the line
attacks with Fionn O’Call and Cian H who used his pace to devastating effect. On another night he would have had a hat trick. One such attacking effort ended up with Mark receiving the ball on the left wing where he had drifted to in search of a touch. He delightfully took the ball past 1 man, beat another with a nut- meg, rounded the next and
then from the left side of the edge of the box, drove a rasping viciously dipping left foot shot over the keep- er and into the net. A just reward for a huge perfor- mance in a new position. The whistle was blown soon after and the Beg are top of the table for the first time in this team’s history. It’s been a long road but deserved. With a game in hand over our nearest chal- lengers, who happen to be our next opponents, the fu- ture is in their own hands. Let’s all give them the sup- port they need and deserve and you never know what might happen. Mon the Beg. Squad on the night. Cian O’Shea, James
O’Shea, Tommi Oosthu- izen, Sean Busteed, Jake O’Shea,
Mark Hogan,
Fionn O’Toole, Olivier Jor- dan, Aaron Atkinson, Cian Hegarty, Pete White, Tom- my Fahy, Sean Hennessy, Fionn O’Callaghan and Jack Flynn. Max Forbes also pictured who is out sick at the moment but manful- ly turned up to support his team mates.
