THE BOXMASTERS THE KUDZOO INTERVIEW
by Michael Buffalo Smith Take one part 60’s British Invasion sound,
add in one part classic Hillbilly Country music, mix with a sprinkling of Southern Rock, a bit of Byrds jingle-jangle guitar and a singer that, although at times he brings to mind the great Tom Petty, is uniquely his own front man. Place mixture onstage for 90 min- utes and cook on high heat. This is the secret recipe for The Boxmasters. Oh, I almost for- got, add those seventeen herbs and spices, some American Spirit cigarettes and a lot of cold Budweiser. On April 14, 2015 I found myself once
again standing in the wings, stage right, at the beautiful Merrimack Hall in Huntsville, Ala- bama, watching as The Boxmasters did a sound check and rehearsed a couple of new
8
tunes. I had not seen Billy Bob and J.D. since my birthday in 2012, and had not seen Brad and Teddy since their last appearance at Mer- rimack seven years ago. It was a happy re- union. These guys are my buds, The best. I sat down at a table with the band while
they signed copies of their newest album Somewhere Down The Road, and conducted a little “catch up” interview. For the uninitiated, The Boxmasters are:
J.D. Andrew on guitar and vocal; Brad Davis on lead guitar and vocal; Teddy Zig Zag on keyboards and vocals; and Bud (Billy Bob) Thornton on lead vocals. While Bud plays drums on the records, they always tour with a bass player and a drummer so he can be at the front of the stage where he belongs. Everybody was ready to rock, and in a great mood as we sat down to chat.
