DIXIE DINER The Nu-Way, a Spartanburg Tradition

The Nu-Way Lounge and Restaurant 373 E Kennedy Street Spartanburg, SC 29302

The last time I had visited the Nu-Way was dur-

ing my Spartanburg Methodist College days. It was either 1985 or ‘86, and I wasn’t there for the food. I was there for the music. On that night they were featuring local singer/songwriter/poet/rocker, the now legendary Matthew Knights. The place was packed and Matthew was as excellent as ever. Flash forward 30 years and I am lunching with

my pal Leah Longshore Pruitt who works at SMC and her friend and co-worker Becky Snow. As I walked into the somewhat dark bar/restaurant, I took note of the mortar-board outside the door. There, written in chalk on the blackboard was “Tonight: Matthew Knights.” Yep. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I wanted to return that night to revisit the great music of Mr. K., but as it were, I had a prior appointment I could not weasel out of. I listened as the ladies ordered a “Redneck

Cheeseburger” ($7.99) to split between them. Now, this is a burger! The Food Network says “This is the one burger you have to try when in South Carolina!” No small wonder. The meat is hand-patted with dry rub spices and a dash of Worcestershire sauce, their secret sauce and topped with homemade pimento cheese. (The family recipe.) It is served with dill pickle and chips. Judging by the looks on the girls faces, it was pretty awesome. There are a lot of burger choices here, including

The Shane Pruitt Band Blues Burger (classic burger with blue cheese added); The Piedmont Boys Honky Tonk Burger; and the Fat Ass Burger (fea- tured in Garden & Gun Magazine), it boasts double meat, double bacon, double redneck pimento cheese, topped with a sunny side up egg and served with fries ($14.99) You can order all sorts of tasty deli sandwiches,

including one named after my friend, singer Fayssoux McLean! The Fayssoux Nu-Way Deli Club

($7.50) looks mighty tasty. There are simply tons of choices of sandwiches, breads, meats and condi- ments. Don’t let me forget the appetizers. Fried Pickles,

Fried Green Beans (eat your veggies!), Redneck Nachos, Fried Mushrooms, yum! Speaking of appe- tizers, I elected to make my lunch Wesley’s Fish & Chips. ($6.99) Good old breaded cod fish cooked up just right and served with the Nu-Way’s signature fries. Man, that was good eatin’! They have great salads, Specialty Sandwiches,

Hot Dogs, and more. Sweet Southern iced tea, soft drinks and a wide variety of cold beer. As I was leaving, I decided I just had to sample

their famous Redneck Pimento Cheese, which can be purchased ala carte at $4.50 for 7 ounces. I took it home and had some with club crackers. The next day I slathered some on a toasted roast beef sand- wich and kicked it up a notch! I could hear Emeril in my ear yelling “Bam!” Check out this timeless restaurant and bar when

visiting Sparkle-City. There’s something for every- one, from rock star to rednecks -even redneck rock stars!
