happens. We had one of the buses break down, and we got that all taken care of.
Buffalo: Have you had any special guests come out? Billy Bob: We did. Supe Granda from The Ozark Mountain Daredevils came out when we were in Franklin, Tennessee and played on “If You Wanna Get to Heaven,” which we hadn’t played in a while. We just learned it at sound check that day, because the new guys hadn’t played it. I got a call the other day from Jim Dandy (Black Oak Arkansas) and he said he’s coming out to see us in Memphis.
Buffalo: (Imitates Jim Dandy) Hot and nasty! Billy Bob: (Laughs) You know what my fa- vorite song by them was? “Uncle Lijah.”
Buffalo: Yeah that first album was my favorite. Billy Bob: Mine too. To this day that is my fa- vorite album by them. I liked the other one, Keep The Faith was a good record too. But still, that first one, you can’t beat that.
Buffalo: I enjoyed the more commer- cial stuff too, like High On The Hog, but that first one was so raw and full of energy. I had never heard anything like it at the time. Billy Bob: Yeah, it’s like Grand Funk Railroad. Those first three records and that Atlanta Pop Festival record? Unbelievable. And then when they got into..
Buffalo:”Some Kind of Wonderful”? Billy Bob: “Some Kinda Wonderful,” yeah..
Buffalo: Sings “I’m in love with the girl that I’m taklin’ about” (“Bad Time (To Be In Love).” ... Billy Bob: Yeah, that kind of thing. And those are great records, and they played and sang the shit out of them, but it’s just not... I liked
the heavier stuff.
Buffalo: The last time I saw Grand Funk they were opening for ZZ Top, around 1982. They were amazing then. Billy Bob: We opened for ZZ Top in Mont- gomery, and we opened for them at Missis- sippi State the other night.
Buffalo: Man! I dearly love that band. Billy Gibbons makes me think about guitars - I met a guy named Richard Brent at the Allman Brothers Band Big House yesterday at my book signing. He allowed me to hold and pick Duane Allman’s ‘57 Gold Top Les Paul. That thing has all kinds of mojo on it. Brad: (Laughs) Got the mojo!
Buffalo: (Laughing) Fo sho! But he had a recent photo of Billy Gibbons playing that thing and a great story about it. My buddy Denny Walley that played with Zappa came out and sat in with me and these southern rock stars, and he was amazing. He can play anything. I am al- ways expecting him to launch into “Just me and the pigmy pony over by the dental floss bush!” (Everyone laughs) But he plays blues and rock equally well. Billy Bob: Oh yeah, Denny.
Buffalo: We used to sit in my living room with two guitars, and we would play what he called “air sculpture.” We might play “Free Bird” and segue into “Zombie Woof.” Billy Bob: I’d love to see that set list. First we’re gonna play “Green Grass and High Tides,” and then we’re gonna play “Stink Foot.” (Everyone laughs)
Buffalo: Besides the tour dates that are posted, are you going to add more?
