The Rebel Yell Book Tour I Get By with a Little Help From My Friends...
by Michael Buffalo Smith

I had made a decision from the beginning
that I would only visit independent book stores on the Rebel Yell book tour. No corpo- rations. I can’t say that it was an original idea by any means. Marsha and Mary Beth at Mer- cer University Press certainly encouraged it, and I had observed the places that my fellow “Southern Rock” authors Galadrielle Allman and Scott B. Bomar had visited on their tours. My tour began in my hometown of Spar-
tanburg, SC on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Hub City Book Shop downtown (
www.hubc-
ity.org/bookshop/about). Anne Watson was our hostess and Betsy Teeter was also a huge help. Our very special guests for the inaugural event were Franklin Wilkie, former bassist for The Marshall Tucker Band and Justin McCorkle of the Justin McCorkle Band, son of founding MTB guitarist George McCorkle. A nice crowd came out for the signing, includ- ing a lot of my personal friends. Thanks guys. The signing was followed by a Question and
ited Joe’s Place Book Store & Wine Bar on South Main Street in Greenville, SC (
www.joesplacellc.com). Becky, Mary and Alex treated us like rock stars. And you’ve got to love a store with a wine bar. Their slogan is “sit, sip, read” - three of my favorite activities! Again, my friend Justin McCorkle came out as my special guest. While the turnout was nominal, my roommate and I fell in love with Joe’s Place and have become regulars. There’s nothing more fun than browsing all the used books, and I have found some clas- sics there. (By classics, I mean Star Trek: The New Voyages.) Of course, we joined their monthly wine club, and please allow me to suggest that you do the same. On February 7th we had a signing in
Tryon, NC at The Bookshelf on Trade Street downtown (
www.tryonbookshelf.com). It brought back great memories of my days as an announcer and News Director at WTYN Radio and as a reporter for The Tryon Daily Bulletin newspaper. Penny Padgett has a great store that is packed wall to wall with books, gifts and more. She even served re- freshments. The hostess with the mostest! Again I was blessed that my friends Frank Wilkie and Justin McCorkle acted as spe- cial guests. We even had a third star show up just to show her support, my dear friend, country songstress Fayssoux McLean Starling from Spartanburg. Fayssoux was a long time member of the Emmylou Harris
