of napkins. I made the oysters my meal, and even ordered a second round. Accompanied by a Bloody Mary, it was just what the doctor ordered. Now Whitey’s is the real deal. You can get Gator tail, lobster, shrimp, mussels, clams, fresh fish- if it’s in the ocean, they have it. Try their special nightly all you can eat cat- fish fry ($16.95). Buffalo says “Check it out!”
Sliders Seafood Grille, 218 First Street, Neptune Beach, Florida (904) 246-0881 (
slidersseafoodgrille.com) After my adventure at Whitey’s, I found
myself craving even more oysters. The day of my book signing at The Bookmark, Scott Greene and I went walking in the “on and off” rain and stopped in for a drink at Sliders. I decided to indulge my craving and ordered some raw oysters on the half-shell. One dozen ($12) They were mighty tasty with seafood sauce and cold iced tea. Slider’s is a cool bar/restaurant right there on the beach with a full menu and plenty of adult beverages to choose from. Love the oysters!
pura, soup, and a California roll. It also comes with a side salad featuring the mighty tasty house dressing. A great value and great taste.
Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit BBQ, (
www.famousdavesbbq.com/) with four loca- tions in Phoenix, AZ, Dave’s is another good one. Upon the recommendation of my friend, I ordered the “Burnt Ends” ($9.49) This ten- der Texas beef brisket is juicy and melts in your mouth. Good stuff. Pair it with a loaded baked potato ($3.69) and you have something worth writing home about. By the way, their Bloody Mary is pretty dog gone good too.

there that we went back a couple of days later. It is an easy walk from the Convention Center where Comicon was being held. My favorite thing about Steve’s is the “misters,” they spray cool mist onto your frying head as you enter. Again, that’s important given the “fry n egg on the sidewalk” temps there in Phoenix. The first day, I ordered the fish tacos ($9.95) and they were excellent. Two grilled to perfec- tion tilapia-stuffed soft tacos with all the trimmings, served with a cup of Steve’s amaz- ing white chili and a side salad. By the way, these guys do iced tea right! A huge plastic tumbler filled with ice cubes and some good tea. Note to Southerners. Be sure to add your sweetener! Arizona does not do sweet tea! On our second visit I was tempted to repeat the same order, but just to shake it up a bit, I or- dered the Steak Fajita Wrap ($8.95). Field greens tossed in vinaigrette dressing with plenty of grilled sirloin, onions and peppers in a tortilla, served with a side of guacamole. It was some of the best fajita I have had in years.
