component supplier. Also, interchangeabil- ity can significantly reduce R&D costs; the luminaire maker can incorporate next-gen- eration LED modules when these are introduced – typically every six months or so – without extensive redesign. It also allows the luminaire maker to easily offer a wide range of product variants simply by using a different module with different perfor- mance characteristics. In terms of intellectual property, all Zhaga members must grant each other royalty-free licenses for all patents that are necessary to implement Zhaga’s interface specifications. In this way, Zhaga users are not tied to one supplier’s proprietary interface technology, which would make switching suppliers a problem. However, it’s important to note that Zhaga specifications only define aspects that are essential to interchangeability. Companies still have the freedom to differentiate their products by using proprietary technology in- side their LED light engines, or by designing luminaires with unique features.


Book 4 and Book 7 modules Books 4 and 7 are significant for Zhaga, since many people will be more familiar with the circular modules and light engines defined in Books 2 and 3. At first glance, Books 4 and 7 are similar in that each covers a range of rectangular LED modules that are typically screw-mounted into a luminaire, and which have separate LED drivers (which Zhaga usually refers to as electronic control gear). However, the two Books are aimed at different applications. Book 4 modules are primarily intended for applications that need a high-intensity light source, such as street lighting and industrial high-bay lighting. Three different Book 4 variants are defined according to the overall dimensions of the light-emitting surface (LES); the LES categories are 30mm long x 7.5mm wide, as well as 42 x 10.5mm, and 60 x 15.0mm. The LED module maker is able to decide on the number and configuration of LEDs, depending on the required lumen output and other factors. One example is the Prevaled Compact module from Osram

(see photo), which is certified according to Zhaga Book 4, and has a rated luminous flux of 8165lm for a 120º beam angle. The mod- ule consumes 78W and the board measures 110 x 46mm. Meanwhile, Book 7 defines a range of LED modules for indoor lighting applications such as office lighting. These are linear modules and bars, as well as one small square module. More versions are likely to be added to Book 7 in the coming months, including larger panels. For now, there are five variants, defined according to the over- all dimensions of the LED module. Three of these are 280mm in length, with widths of 24, 41 and 61mm (designated L28W2, L28W4 and L28W6). There is also a module that is 561mm in length (L56W4) as well as a small- er one measuring 60 x 60mm (L6W6).


New developments As well as updating (and, in some cases, adding to) the existing Books, Zhaga contin- ues to evaluate various proposals for new Books. These are driven by Zhaga members, who identify product types and application


areas where new light-engine specifications could be beneficial. Recently, Zhaga decided to start work on Books 9 and 10. Details remain to be de- fined, but Book 9 will cover small, mid-pow- er LED modules with separate control gear. The LED boards will have a ring-shaped LES with pre-defined diameters. Such a specifi- cation could enable products primarily for use in consumer lighting applications, such as small spotlights, track lighting and other compact luminaires. Meanwhile, Book 10 will provide speci- fications for a circular LED module with separate control gear, designed to enable higher-output spotlight-type applications. In many respects, Book 10 can be considered as a larger-diameter version of Book 3. Zhaga has also initiated a mapping activity to evaluate the use of modular LED light sources across a wide range of lighting ap- plications. The goal is to identify opportuni- ties and develop priorities for the develop- ment of new specifications that will provide most benefit to the LED lighting industry. www.zhagastandard.org
