CARNIVAL PROCESSION BANDS

BOURNEMOUTH CARNIVAL BAND Entertaining you before Procession

1.30pm to 2.00pm - Arena, Sandpit Field & 2.15pm - Seafront to Lower High Street

The Bournemouth Carnival Band, formed towards the end of 1982, has become established as the UK’s leading, and Europe’s most entertaining comedy marching band.

The bandsmen aged 16 to nearly museum relics, and dressed in various colourful costumes, have ‘perfected’ a unique blend of music and crazy comedy antics. This, combined with its marching routines, ensures that the band is always in great demand. Drums, brass, bugles and bell-lyres (similar to glockenspiels) provide the means to play a wide spectrum of musical styles from Traditional Military, American Marching Band, Pop, Swing, Jazz, Disco, and Latin American.

The Band has appeared at Carnivals, Fetes, and Shows throughout England, it has toured Northern France and by invitation, has appeared in the prestigious Jersey ’Battle of Flowers’ on six occasions. The Band has performed twice in the ‘Lucerne Winter Carnival’ in Switzerland, and was the first ever British band invited to participate in the 100-year-old event.

The band’s main aim is to assist in the raising of funds for worthy causes, especially those concerned with children having special needs. The band also helps other charitable organisations and supports and encourages youth bands as part of its effort to promote musical knowledge and expertise. As the band is a registered charity, the bandsmen receive no payment for their time or efforts, but in return gain huge pleasure from seeing others enjoying the shows. Visit the band’s new website for more information: www.bcband.co.uk.

Samba Panashe is very much a community based band bringing together a diverse mix of people, skills and abilities; within the band there have been professional percussionists and absolute beginners; people who play in many bands, and those for whom Samba Panashe is their only musical outlet. Ages range from early teens to early eighties!

Samba is a Brazilian dance and music genre originating in Bahia, Brazil, with its roots in Rio de Janeiro and Africa. It’s exuberant, rhythmic, bright and colourful. Within the genre, there are of course many variants, some reflecting different regions of Brazil. The instruments are largely percussion, the big surdo drums setting the rhythm, with snares, tambourine, agogo, ganza, and repinique making up the rest of what the band use.

The band rehearses every Wednesday during term times at Kings Park Primary School, Ashley Road, Bournemouth, where you will very welcome try a session. Visit www.sambapanashe.com for more information.

SAMBA PANASHE Samba Panashe is the latest incarnation of a samba tradition in Bournemouth going right back to 1996! A samba band was formed for The Sea Carnival in Boscombe, called The Boscombe School of Samba. It was originally brought together for that one event, but everyone loved playing the music so much, no one wanted to stop!

Boscombe School of Samba became Bournemouth School of Samba, which then became Panelinho do Samba and eventually Samba Panashe, still with one or two members from those very first days in 1996.
