The exotic Flower Girls are ever present. They depict purity and youth, preparing the path for those whose achievements are been honoured. The Colours of Glory section is a reflection of the gold, silver and bronze medals associated with the Olympic Games. The three designs heavily feature the olive branch which symbolises ‘goodwill and peace’, principles that are inherent today as they were in ancient Greece. The portrayal continues with the Medallists, in bronze, silver and gold. These colours symbolise the three ages of man: the Bronze Age, the age of heroes, the Silver Age, where youth lasted a hundred years and the Golden Age, where men lived among the gods.

Finally, all participants come together to close off the procession in a dazzling display of colour and artistic mastery to celebrate the ultimate in camaraderie and provide a closure fitting to such a tremendous exhibition of human endurance and achievement.

MASQUERADE 2000 Also appearing: After Procession - Arena, Sandpit Field

M2K is a carnival arts organisation based in East London and is celebrating its 20th year in carnival. This year’s theme is ‘Going for Gold’ - A theme surrounding the Olympics : The opening ceremony, events and medals.

The theme, Going for Gold, follows the story of the Olympic Games. This most ancient festival of sporting events was highly competitive and afforded, at the time, a period of truce, adventure and togetherness. London will have the opportunity, this year, to showcase to the world its hospitality in hosting the Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games. There is an atmosphere of anticipated achievement and celebration in the air as preparations are made.

M2K opens its portrayal with Fire, representing the torch. Fire has its divine connotations, as the Greeks believed Prometheus, the champion of mankind, stole fire from the gods and gave it to mortals. We follow this with the Opening Ceremony, where all participating sporting arenas introduce themselves as hopeful aspirants to the waiting audience. The very air is ablaze with the excitement of what is yet to come.

Rampage’s high energy performance is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face and a feeling of awe for its elaborate costumes. Many of the club’s artists and designers travel the world designing and creating high quality costumes for a wide range of events and have just returned from a hugely successful trip to Hong Kong to perform in the Chinese New Year celebrations.
