The main system at Avalon comprises six Fulcrum Prophile XLS-VHF full range coaxial horn cabinets providing 90° horizontal coverage, six Fulcrum Prophile L dual 15-inch coaxial loudspeakers producing wide dispersion angles and robust low frequency performance, and 10 Fulcrum Prophile M Dual 12-inch loudspeakers. The product used in the largest quantity was the Fulcrum Prophile S dual 8-inch loudspeaker, 23 were installed at the club. The Prophile S speakers are equipped with a dedicated low frequency transducer - which provides an extra mid bass impact - ideal for creating the dance party atmosphere at Avalon. Furthermore there are two Fulcrum Prophile P 8-inch loudspeakers to cater for the high SPLs, two Fulcrum TQ Install CX1295 12-inch loudspeakers housed in trapezoidal enclosures for stage monitoring, plus two Fulcrum FA28 dual 8-inch portable coaxial loudspeakers and two Fulcrum Prophile DJ-M dual 12-inch loudspeakers for DJ monitors. John said: “In addition to being an excellent manufacturer of speakers, Fulcrum is also a solution-based organisation. If a product does not exist for a particular condition, their very talented team of engineers work side by side with me to solve the problem. Often times, the resulting product makes its way into the product line.” To supplement the speaker system, John selected 10 Fulcrum US221-2 dual 21-inch subwoofers, known for their immense impact and solid musicality. The coupling of these 20 drivers in a single array creates a dancefl oor experience like no other. Four Fulcrum US212 dual 12-inch subwoofers, the baby brother to the US221, and six Fulcrum Sub215 dual 15-inch subwoofers round out the low frequencies for the rest of the space. The system is powered by a staggering 41 Crown amplifi ers, seven MA9000’s, 31 MA5000’s amplifi ers, two CDI4000’s and a CT8150. Processing is controlled via a BSS Soundweb London BLU system. John continued: “The main stage system doubles to be a part of the dance system. We selected products that had the best size to output ratio, to have them be as unobtrusive as possible. I selected Crown amplifi ers and BSS London processing. They sound great and are very reliable.” To install this extensive sound system in a glass environment and make it produce crystal clear sound, was something of a challenge. John explained: “The glass walls are a sound designer’s worst nightmare. To mitigate the obvious problems created by them, I minimised the point sources of sub bass as much as possible and increased the number of mid high devices so that each area of the space had its own discreet system. By keeping the music close to the listener, I was able to reduce the amount of unwanted refl ections in the room. This worked well in most of the space but there are still a few areas that I avoid when possible.” While Steve outlined challenges of a different kind: “I think the adjustment to a new culture and way of thinking has been challenging and also a great learning process. Coordinating install teams from around the world has been tough given time and
