THE BERLIN ARTIST PHILIPP GEIST (1976) WORKS INTERNATIONALLY AS A LIGHT AND MULTIMEDIA ARTIST IN THE MEDIUMS OF VIDEO, FAÇADE MAPPING, PERFORMANCE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND PAINTING. IN 2011, HE DISPLAYED ABSTRACT PHOTO WORKS IN A SOLO EXHIBITION IN THE MUSEUM FÜR GEGENSTANDSFREIE KUNST IN OTTERNDORF, INCLUDING THE VIDEO MAPPING SHOW ‘CONSTRUCTION | DECONSTRUCTION’ ON THE MUSEUM FAÇADE AND THE INSTALLATION ‘LIQUID TIME’ ON THE HISTORICAL WATER TOWER IN CUXHAVEN. EARLIER IN 2011, HE SHOWED HIS OUTDOOR INSTALLATION ‘TIME DRIFTS’ DURING THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY OF VANCOUVER, AND IN 2010, ‘TIME DRIFTS’ COULD BE EXPERIENCED BY THE VISITORS OF THE MONTREAL MUTEK FESTIVAL FOR NEW MEDIA. IN DECEMBER 2009, GEIST SHOWED A 4D MAPPING INSTALLATION ON THE FAÇADE OF THE ROYAL THRONE IN BANGKOK ON THE OCCASION OF KING BHUMIBOL’S 82ND BIRTHDAY. THE ONE HOUR SHOW WAS SEEN BY 2.5 MILLION VISITORS. AT THE GLOW FESTIVAL 2009 IN EINDHOVEN, HE SHOWED THE LIGHT INSTALLATION ‘TIMING’. HE HAS EXHIBITED HIS ARTWORK AND AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCES INTERNATIONALLY AT VARIOUS RENOWNED FESTIVALS AND ART SPACES. GEIST’S PROJECTS ARE CHARACTERISED BY THEIR COMPLEXITY AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE LOCATION, THE SOUND AND MOVING IMAGES. IN HIS VIDEO MAPPING INSTALLATIONS, HE AVOIDS USING CANVASSES AND TURNS DIVERSE ARCHITECTURES INTO MOVING, PAINTERLY LIGHT SCULPTURES, WHICH CHALLENGE THE ONLOOKERS’ PERCEPTION OF TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONALITY.

I started taking photos at the age of 13 years, at around 18 I began with large scale painting and later with video installations and audio visual cooperations with different musicians and music styles.


What excited you at the beginning of your career? And what excites you now? My first exhibition in 1996 was set in a forest in bavaria. I placed the large scale oil and acrylic paintings into the forest. It was my first installation in the public space, and working with and for the public space has grown even more important for my work.


At the beginning of my career I focused on photoworks and paintings, today my work is focused on video installation projects and developing site-specific concepts, audio / visual performances and exhibitions of my photo and video works.


Where does inspiration come from?


There is a lot of interesting art and culture that inspired and interested me. I’m really interested in the field of non-realistic paintings like Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter or the expanded cinema movement among many others. My biggest inspiration comes from nature, music and travelling. Seeing, capturing and transforming everyday things and shadows, light reflections, structures and tiny elements are basic proce- dures in my work.


Can you tell us about the relationships between location, sound and moving images?


For my site-specific installations and concepts the location is the base for the de- velopment of my artistic ideas and concepts. The installations are a kind of dialogue with a façade or a place. Before developing a concept I get familiar with the place, surroundings and area. Also in my audio / visual performances, there is this idea of a non-verbal dialogue with different mediums.
