Bridge of Weir Cubs - The cubs who conkered…
Bridge of Weir Cubs have had a cracking time lately practicing the ancient art of playing conkers. As well as enjoying the relative comfort of the made-over Scout hut, the boys have been out and about.
They have enjoyed a trip to the RSPB reserve at Lochwinnoch and climbing at the guide centre at South Newton.
The Cubs also take any opportunity to light a fi re and cook some tasty snacks (under supervision of course).
The pack has vacancies for a few more boys or girls aged between eight and 10 and a half who’d like to join in the fun every Tuesday evening from 7pm until 8.30pm.

Local baby Archie Stark, aged only seven months, has proved himself to be not only a great little swimmer but also brilliant at fundraising. This summer, together with mum Rachel, he was the highest west coast fundraiser for baby and toddler swim school Water Babies, who have been busy splashing for cash to raise vital funds for baby charity Tommy’s, in its annual Splashathon events.
Hundreds of young splashers across the West rose to the occasion in true Water Babies style, participating in fun-fi lled events. And thanks to the support of family and friends, Archie managed to fundraise well over £200 as part of the £9400 total achieved by Water Babies in Scotland.
Sponsorship was raised by babies and toddlers completing special swimming challenges. “Splashathon was hard work to organise, lots of fun to do – but amazing when you realise what a difference we make,” Hugh continues. “Water Babies has supported Tommy’s Splashathon since 2006 and here in Scotland I’m delighted that we’ve raised over £35,000 through the years. I feel incredibly proud of Archie and of all the other splashers and their parents for taking this truly worthwhile cause to their hearts.”
Mum Rachel, who thought it was important to get involved, commented “Archie loves swimming and I think the Splashathon is a great way to raise money for Tommy’s and to help give babies the best chance of being born healthy.”
All monies raised by Water Babies locally will help fund Tommy’s Scottish Research centre, based in Edinburgh, which conducts medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage.
Jane Brewin, Chief Executive of Tommy’s, says: “We are so grateful to the Water Babies team around the UK, and all the little splashers who took part in Splashathon this year, for raising so much money for Tommy’s. It’s a very important contribution to our medical research and information programmes, meaning we can help to give even more babies the best chance in life. We are very proud of our long term partnership with Water Babies and we’d like to thank all the mums, dads and babies who took part.”
