SSAFA Forces Help
October marked the 10th anniversary of British military operations in the Afghanistan confl ict. Since 2001, many members of our Armed Forces have given their lives and many more have been seriously injured. But it will be a long time before the full effect of the confl ict is known on all those who have taken part. As our soldiers, sailors and airmen return home, some will be carrying physical and mental scars that will last a lifetime. For some, their long term care will fall to families and friends who will often require support themselves.
In the months and years to come, SSAFA Force Help will be here to help veterans and their families, young and old alike, including those who have served in Afghanistan. It is important that we remember that the effects of war remain a long time after peace has been declared and that we all owe a debt of gratitude towards all those men and women who have served their nation regardless of personal sacrifi ce.
Over the course of more than a century SSAFA Forces Help has adapted and evolved to meet the changing needs of our Armed Forces. Founded in 1885 to support the troops and families of the second expeditionary force to Egypt, the charity’s work is just as relevant today as it was then. SSAFA’s family support groups are playing a vital role in helping relatives come to terms with loss and life-changing injuries. Our two Norton Homes allow injured troops to spend time with their loved ones away from the hospital environment, giving them the opportunity to do normal family things such as eat a meal together or simply watch a fi lm.
In addition each year in the UK our network of trained volunteers continue to assist 50,000 people - Second World War, Malayan, Korean, Suez, Aden, Falklands, Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, National Servicemen, members of the Territorial Army, the Merchant Navy and their families.
We currently operate from The Wynd Centre in Paisley (0141 840 4060) and we would welcome enquiries from volunteers, we have no paid staff, who would help us administer the various needs of those who require our assistance – training will be given and necessary expenses paid.
